Alex Hunter details some of his favorite long shot outright winner bets for the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.
Following THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas, the PGA TOUR travels just about an hour south to Colonial Country Club (par 70, 7,289 yards, bentgrass greens) in Fort Worth, for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Since this event’s inception in 1946, Colonial has been the home of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Ben Griffin (-12) won this event last season by one stroke. This week’s field consists of 133 players and there will be a top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds.
Below, I have featured two of my favorite outright long shot bets to win the Charles Schwab Challenge on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Novak has made 2-of-3 cuts at Colonial with his best result being a T11 last season. Fast forward a year later and Novak returns to Colonial trending up. The 31-year-old has made seven of his last eight cuts and produced four top-30 finishes over this span. Novak finished T14th at the Valero Texas Open in April and he is coming off a T26 at the PGA Championship played at the challenging Aronimink GC.
Novak has gained strokes on approach in back-to-back starts and this season, he ranks 17th in proximity on approach shots from 150-175 yards out, which is a great sign for Colonial. Over the last five years, 23.9% of approach shots at this par 70 have come from 150-175 yards, compared to the PGA TOUR average of 19.9%.
Novak has contended in Texas before, finishing T3rd at last year’s Valero Texas Open and him being in the mix for his second PGA TOUR win this week is a possibility.
Suber’s game is ascending right now and he is worth backing at these very long odds. In his last four solo starts, Suber has finished T28th, MC, T18th and fourth, with that final performance coming at last week’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson. This is Suber’s best PGA TOUR finish to date and he put on a show at TPC Craig Ranch, carding a career-low 10-under 61 in the second round and an 8-under 63 in the final round.
Suber gained strokes in every major category at the Texas venue and he has shot under par in eight straight rounds. Suber finished just T53rd in his first attempt at Colonial last season, but he displayed some great upside at the venue, posting a 7-under 63 in the second round, which tied for the lowest number of the tournament.
He returns to Colonial 71 spots higher in the world golf rankings this week and he ranks 14th in SG APP this season. Colonial is a second-shot course where iron play is most important – three of the last five winners here have finished the event top-12 in SG APP – and the flourishing Suber has a legitimate chance to contend at this track.
