Mark your calendars and get ready for the all-new series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The two-episode premiere is coming to @DisneyPlus on April 6. pic.twitter.com/JZM3c7TytM
The next two chapters of the series are titled “Strange Allies” and “Finale.” The episodes will drop Monday at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT. Maul went through the ringer a bit after surviving a duel with a pair of inquistors. Injured and alone, Maul’s mind transported him on a journey through all his pain and suffering. He survives it, however, and makes it back to his crew and is presented with an interesting opporunity for an alliance. Before I get to that, take a look at teaser below which sees Devon and Master Eeko-Dio Daki form an unlikely alliance with Maul against Marrok and The Crow.

Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Episode 7 and 8 recap
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
We see Maul traversing through the underground of Janix with Devon and Rylee. Maul continues to try to sway Devon to his side and is growing frustrated with her unwillingness to see his point of view. She also dredges up memories of Maul’s master, which could have been the impetus for what Maul goes through in the following episode.
We see a clash between Imperial forces and Maul’s motley crew, which is beautifully staged. Unfortunately in the scuffle Icarus is killed and Maul has to face off with Marrok and The Crow alone. Further damage is done to his mechanical legs, leaving him vulnerable and seemingly about to be killed (after all, the Emperor wants him dead, so surrender is fuitile). However, Maul is able to collapse the ceiling of the cave they’re dueling in, allowing for his escape.
Maul spends most of “Creeping Fear” is dire straits — from his physical and emotional wounds, as he relives some of his strongest trauma. He sees himself being seperated from his brother, being electricuted with Force lightning by Sidious, cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi, descending into madness in the aftermath of Naboo and the death of his brother at Sidious’ hands. The reflection of his younger self apologizes to him, but Maul tells him it’s alright and that he won’t let “him” do this to anyone else. It’s really the first time we’re made to feel sympathetic to Maul and what he’s been through. Like all villains, he’s always felt as though he is the hero of his story, even in some twisted way. Here he almost has a noble reason, from a certain point of view, for taking his revenge against Sidious and his Empire. No matter what, Maul is able to get up and find his way back to his allies and formulate a new plan from the offices of Nico Deemis, one that includes Dryden Vos of Crimson Dawn, last seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Things are indeed looking up.
While Maul is going through all this, Daki, Brander Lawson and Devon are attempting to rescue Rylee from Imperial forces. For the first time Daki comes off more cowardly than wise in his reluctance to assist in rescuing the younger Lawson, who ends up interrogated by The Crow. Thankfully, Two-Boots finally comes to understand that sometimes protocol is not always the way to go, as he sees how nasty the Empire really is. Eventually Brander contacts Two-Boots to make a swap, himself for his son. He seems not to judge Two-Boots for everything that has gone on, even calling him partner, and Two-Boots finally comes around and instead of going through with the swap (after another instance of an attempted Star Wars rescue using the claim of a prisoner swap) helps Rylee escape and goes off with our heroes in a stolen speeder. They are chased throughout the city , but evade capture long enough to reach coordinates Sul has provided Lawson for an escape off planet. But the Jedi sense that something is off, which Rheena Sul surreptitiously confirms by referencing Catalor. The Jedi, the Lawsons and Two-Boots avoid walking directly into a trap by cutting their way through the ceiling, and Rheena helps give them more time by taking our Imperial forces and blowing up the transport.
I’ve been waiting for the moment where Devon casts her lot with Maul over her old master, but perhaps I was wrong. The moment where she tells Rylee that fear is natural, it just can’t control a person is very Jedi-like and suggests perhaps her allegiance to the light and the Jedi way hasn’t been shaken as much as I initially thought. Or it’s a red herring for the moment where she finally does succumb to Maul’s manipulation. We’ll have to wait for the finale to find out.
