Bryan Armetta breaks down the biggest risers and fallers for Survivor 50 following Wednesday’s eighth episode, ‘Double the Fun, Double the Demise’.
Another week, another out of nowhere twist on Survivor 50. In episode eight, titled ‘Double the Fun, Double the Demise’, 12 of the remaining 13 players were grouped into pairs. The catch? A vote for one meant a vote for both players. This week, it was Chrissy and none other than Coach, the Dragon Slayer, that were sent home.
Just 11 players are left in the quest for $1 million dollars. Let’s break down who helped and who hurt their stock the most this week on Survivor 50.
No player benefited more from this week’s twist than Tiffany. In episode seven, she was one of Dee’s sole remaining allies. As a result, multiple votes were cast for the season 46 contestant. However, Tiffany was able to pair up with Joe, resulting in an immunity challenge win for the duo. It’s a remarkable turnaround for someone who entered Wednesday night looking like a prime candidate for elimination. In fact, we were even treated to an awkward scene between her and eventual vote-out Coach to start the episode.
Is Tiffany a legitimate candidate to win Survivor 50? It seems like a long-shot at best. Still, plenty of fans expected a deep run from her during the preseason, due to a relatively low threat level. In theory, an appearance at final tribal council is still more than possible. With Jonathan’s alliance losing two numbers (more on that later), there’s more room than ever to maneuver as well. Finding a true number one ally, along with avoiding making any more enemies, will be crucial for Tiffany’s longevity this season.
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget just how good Cirie is at Survivor. She’s never been much for challenge wins or finding immunity idols. However, this old-school legend remains unmatched when it comes to utilizing the social game. Despite an ironclad alliance with Ozzy and Rizo, it seems like everyone thinks they can work with Cirie. Despite early season talk of eliminating such a big threat, her standing in the game has never felt more secure. That’s without mentioning an extra vote, gifted to her on Cilla by Ozzy.
At first, it felt like we wouldn’t get much Cirie this week. She was the odd person out for this week’s pairings, leading to an Exile Island trip. However, Mrs. Fields was able to earn a vote at tribal council by completing an exhausting coconut scavenger hunt. Upon her return to the beach, she played a crucial role in shifting this week’s vote away from Aubry and Rick, instead gunning for Chrissy and Coach. By taking out two birds with one stone, Cirie has crippled Jonathan’s old school alliance. In addition, she’s put her tight-knit trio in a prime position going forward.
To be fair, I think there’s a case to be made for most of the remaining castaways. However, Jonathan has been one of the more visible players all season, especially since the start of the merge. Losing not one, but two close allies in Coach and Chrissy certainly hurts. Following episode seven’s elimination of Dee, it looked like the challenge beast was coming into his own as a strategist. However, such a big move may have painted an even larger target on his back.
As the leader of a now-minority alliance, Jonathan will need to tread lightly over the next few votes. Granted, his physicality could certainly come in handy (assuming we get an actual individual immunity challenge). Still, that’s never a great place to be in this late in the game. Jonathan is a savvy enough player to utilize some strong social connections. In addition, other big players might see him as a meat shield. Regardless, his chances at earning a Survivor 50 win certainly took a hit.
