The Targaryen civil war is about to reach a massive turning point in House of the Dragon Season 3. Sam Connon breaks down everything you need to know before Game of Thrones prequel show returns to HBO.
For the second time this year, HBO is set to deliver another chapter in the Game of Thrones universe. House of the Dragon is coming back for Season 3 after a two-year hiatus, hot on the heels of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 becoming a breakout hit earlier in 2026. This adaptation of the Fire & Blood novel has a lot more at stake than a rural tournament, though, even if both series prominently feature Targaryens.
If you are ready to return to Westeros for more explosive battles and intense political drama, here is everything you need to know before Season 3 gets underway:
Season 3 Episode 1 will premiere on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 21. It will be available to stream on HBO Max at the same time. The season premiere is expected to have a runtime around 72 minutes, but the episode’s title remains unknown.
Like Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and most other major HBO titles, House of the Dragon will release one episode a week – all on Sunday nights. There will be eight episodes in Season 3, as there were in Season 2. After that, HBO has greenlit a fourth and final season with a scheduled release date of 2028.
(Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 and House of the Dragon Season 2 ahead.)
Coming off the back of a slightly more self-contained season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, House of the Dragon is going to boast one of the deepest ensemble casts in television. There are plenty of major players returning from the first two seasons, plus a handful of new faces. Here is a look at who is confirmed to be part of the cast for Season 3:
Coming out of the Red Sowing, Rhaenyra has the dragon math on her side in the Targaryen civil war. Addam of Hull, Hugh Hammer and Ulf White are now riding Seasmoke, Vermithor and Silverwing, respectively. That new trio will join Rhaenyra and Syrax, Daemon and Caraxes, Jace and Vermax and Baela and Moondancer, all while Rhaena tries to bond with Sheepstealer in the Vale. Even with Rhaenys and her dragon, Meleys, dead, the Blacks have the advantage in the most important category of Westerosi war.
As for the Greens, Otto Hightower has been imprisoned by a mysterious captor. Alicent snuck away from King’s Landing and agreed to hand Aegon over to Rhaenyra. However, the crippled young king fled King’s Landing with his Master of Whispers, Larys Strong. The sadistic, one-eyed Aemond is on the throne in his brother’s absence, and he might not want to give up quite as easily as his mother. He still has the gargantuan Vhagar, after all, plus Tyland Lannister just recruited the Triarchy powers from Essos to join their side.
Following a lot of fans’ frustration with the extended table-setting of Season 2, Season 3 is guaranteed to feature some massive moments in the Game of Thrones canon. For starters, we are getting the much-anticipated Battle of the Gullet pretty early on.
Here is the official Season 5 synopsis from HBO: “In Season 3, the factions of House Targaryen engage in a war like no other. Rhaenyra seems poised for victory — with an army of dragons under her control, Aegon II fleeing the capital, and a fraught bargain struck with Alicent. But the balance of power shifts in unforeseen ways as loyalties fracture, bonds reshape, and unpredictable new players enter the fray. As the destruction spirals and the toll of the conflict mounts, those striving for the crown are forced to confront what it means to lead and the costs of wielding their power. What price, if any, is too high to pay for the Iron Throne?”
On top of that, here is the final trailer for House of the Dragon Season 3:
House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 21. The next seven episodes will drop once a week at the same time.
Season 3 will be available to stream on HBO Max. The first two seasons are also available on the streaming service if you are looking to catch up, as are all eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
HBO confirmed in November that House of the Dragon would return for a fourth and final season in 2028.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2, which will adapt The Sworn Sword novella, is scheduled to come out in 2027. The Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest film is in development, although Warner Bros. has yet to lock down a theatrical release date.
