After converting Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic, and Letterboxd scores to a 100-point scale, Masters of the Universe currently holds an average rating of 69.8/100 across major review platforms. That score reflects a generally favorable result for a popcorn movie. Moviegoers unsurprisingly rated the film more favorably than professional reviewers, but the critics were more positive on the film than perhaps some would have expected for a property such as He-Man, which is basically an action figure line come to life.
The average rating was calculated by converting all available scores to a 100-point scale and averaging the results.
The return to Eternia clearly was more enjoyable for both fans and critics than 1987’s much-maligned Masters of the Universe (21% critics, 41% audience on Rotten Tomatoes). Although expectedly some critics found the latest take on the iconic 1980s property as stale as eating old popcorn, others had praise for the film. Glenn Kenny of the New York Times said star Nicholas Galitzine wears Prince Adam’s “mild goofiness loosely, the better to shake it off when the impressive action sequences start.” And Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times says the polarizing Jared Leto gives “the best performance he’s done in years.” On the other side, David Fear of Rolling Stone said “The sarcasm-and-saga methodology is being applied to something that’s too thin to support it.”
Audience reactions have been expectedly enthuastic. The film currently holds a 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.1/10 rating on IMDb, with one audience member calling it “a stupid fun movie” and another saying it was “awesome and so nostalgic. I was nervous it would be another failed attempt but it was great.” That’s not to say there aren’t detractors, as one audience member claims that “car repair manuals have a better plot.” But, on the whole, audience reviews enthuastically embraced the film.
