Rick and Morty is back for more intergalactic, multiverse chaos. Sam Connon breaks down everything you need to know about the cult favorite TV show before Season 9 Episode 1 premieres on Adult Swim and streams on HBO Max.
Rick and Morty has been one of the most popular adult animated series for quite a while now, going through full cycles of hype and anticipation over the past 12-plus years. And while some of the network’s other tentpoles have come and gone, this franchise is moving strong. The bonkers sci-fi show has settled into a more regular release pattern as of late, and that rhythm is set to continue with Season 9, which gets rolling this weekend.
If you are ready to dive back into some raunchy multiversal misadventures, here is everything you need to know before Rick and Morty returns:
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 1 will premiere on Adult Swim at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 24. The episode, which is titled There’s Something About Morty, will have a runtime around 22 minutes. After the episode airs on the cable network, it will be available to stream on HBO Max on Monday, May 25.
As was the case with the past seven seasons, Season 9 will be 10 episodes long. It will run through the finale on Sunday, July 26.
(Warning: Spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 8 ahead.)
Rick and Morty has had a pretty stable cast over the years, barring Adult Swim cutting ties with co-creator and lead voice actor Justin Roiland in 2023. The two titular roles are now filled by separate people, as they were in Seasons 7 and 8. Here is a look at the recurring cast, as well as who they are playing:
Dan Harmon, Kari Wahlgren and Tom Kenny have made various appearances as multiple characters over the years, and will probably pop up in Season 9 as well. Keith David’s President Curtis, who is getting his own spinoff show later this year, could also show up.
The overarching narrative that anchored the early seasons of Rick and Morty is largely in the rear-view mirror. Evil Morty taking over the Citadel of Ricks wrapped up in the Season 5 finale, while Rick finally got his revenge and killed Rick Prime midway through Season 7. There weren’t many massive leaps forward in the lore during Season 8, outside of Morty Jr. making a one-off return after being absent since Season 1.
Based on the trailer for Season 9, there will once again be plenty of intergalactic adventures. There looks to be an episode where the Smith family has to fight their killer house and sentient furniture, an episode where Morty is captured by Neanderthal-like creatures and some kind of martial arts-based episode. With so many random gags and opening credit sequence misdirects, however, it’s hard to nail down exactly what lies ahead.
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 1 will premiere at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 24. The next nine episodes will come out once per week at the same time.
Rick and Morty will air on the Adult Swim cable channel. Episodes will be available the next day on HBO Max.
Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for Season 10 back in 2023, then through Season 12 in 2024. That will take the show through at least 2029, per Variety. There is also a President Curtis spinoff show slated to come out later in 2026.
