The supporting cast deserves plenty of credit, but the Spurs will still only go as far as Victor Wembanyama will take them. The Spurs’ star exploded for 41 points in the series opener and has finished with 21 and 26 points across the past two games. Across the regular season, Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points per game and scored 25+ points in 34 of his 64 games played. Since the playoffs started, the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year is scoring 22.4 points per game and has scored 25+ in six of his 13 games played. There is still no answer for Wembanyama’s combination of size and skill, and the Spurs have left plenty to be desired as far as getting him the ball in favorable spots. This is a must-win matchup from the series’ perspective, and count on a clear effort to give the Spurs’ star chances. Count on Wembanyama bringing the necessary level of effort and energy and scoring 25+ points for the third time in this series.
After playing just 18.2 minutes per game in the regular season, Alex Caruso has seen his postseason role expand greatly. He is playing 22.8 minutes per game across the playoffs overall and 27.0 minutes per game in this series. The two-time NBA champion is scoring 11.3 points per game across the playoffs overall and has tallied scoring totals of 31, 17, and 15 in this series. Oklahoma City is leaning on the defensive game plan of face guarding Wembanyama with Caruso, while Chet Holmgren or Isaiah Hartenstein sit behind as roamers for the bulk of the time. This has provided plenty of time on the floor for the scrappy veteran. On the offensive side of the ball, Caruso is last on the defensive priority list and has made the Spurs pay by knocking down open shots. Expect the same to play out tonight, and for Caruso to continue making his offensive impact felt by knocking down open three-pointers and getting out in transition. Back the Thunder standout to record 10+ points for the fourth straight game and sixth time in these playoffs.
Injuries have been a factor on both sides of this series, but the Thunder are worse for wear entering Game 4. Ajay Mitchell has been the latest player added to the list and will miss tonight’s matchup due to a calf strain. Jalen Williams is also listed as questionable due to his hamstring issues after re-injuring the lingering problem in Game 2 and being held out of Game 3. This has paved the way for Jared McCain to make a strong impact, and he was a difference-maker in the previous win by dropping 24 points. The Duke product also scored 12 points in Game 2 and has played 25+ minutes in back-to-back games. With San Antonio sending double-teams at Shai Gilgeous-Alexander at a high rate, McCain’s additional ball-handling and shooting have been vital to unlocking the offense. With Mitchell and possibly Williams missing in tonight’s game, count on significant offensive responsibility on McCain’s shoulders. Even while struggling to shoot the three-pointer, the former Sixers’ standout has been fearless in attacking the rim and having success with it. McCain is not shy to get his shots up, and count on him to pave his way to 12+ points for the third straight game.
On the other side of the matchup, the Spurs backcourt has battled injury issues. De’Aaron Fox missed the opening two games due to an ankle sprain and re-injured it upon returning in Game 3. Dylan Harper left Game 2 with an adductor injury and was limited to 17 minutes in Game 3, failing to look like the best version of himself. Neither guard is listed on the injury report for tonight, but the bigger question is what level they will be at when they are on the floor. This has left massive responsibility on the shoulders of Stephon Castle, and the Spurs have had to live through the ups and downs. While turnovers have been an issue for the UConn product, he has largely delivered for the team. Last year’s Rookie of the Year averaged 16.7 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game across the regular season. Since the playoffs kicked off, he has posted averages of 19.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game. Across this three-game series, he is averaging 18.7 points, 8.7 assists, and 5.3 rebounds. Castle tallied six rebounds and 11 assists in Game 1, five rebounds and eight assists in Game 2, and five rebounds and seven assists in the previous matchup. Count on the Spurs leaning on him at a high rate, and for Castle to continue delivering. San Antonio will have a clear focus on attacking the glass as a team, and Castle will continue being asked to be the lead decision-maker in the offense. Back the 21-year-old to record 12+ combined rebounds and assists for the fourth straight game in this series and make his impact felt throughout.
