Sean Barnard details his top same game parlay for the Charlotte Hornets vs. Orlando Magic NBA Play-in Tournament matchup.
The last two tickets to the NBA playoffs will be punched tonight in the final two play-in matchups. Tipping off at 7:40 p.m. ET, with an opportunity to face the Detroit Pistons in the opening round of the postseason on the line, the Charlotte Hornets will take on the Orlando Magic. The Hornets picked up a thrilling win over the Heat in the 9 vs. 10 game to keep their season alive, while the Magic lost a frustrating matchup to the 76ers to fall into this matchup.
Tonight, DraftKings Sportsbook is offering an amazing 30% profit boost promotion for the beginning of the NBA Play-In Tournament. Opt in and create a same game parlay (SGP) for this tilt between the Heat and the Hornets with your single-use Profit Boost Token. The only catch? The parlay must be at least four legs with odds of at least +300 or longer. Seems simple enough, right? So simple I think I’ll whip one up right now.

The Charlotte Hornets have been one of the best teams in the NBA for the home stretch of the season. Since January 3rd, they have tallied the best net rating in the league, the top offensive rating, and the fourth-best defensive rating. Charlotte was 11-23 before this and closed the year by going 33-15 since this point. They showed some guts in the scrappy win over the Heat and are facing a Magic team that looks like they have quit on the year. Orlando closed down the regular season with an embarrassing loss to the Celtics, who were resting all their starters, and fell to the 76ers in their opening play-in matchup without Joel Embiid.
These are two teams trending in opposite directions, and expect this to be put on full display tonight. The Hornets won 3 of the 4 regular-season games this season, with the lone victory coming in the sixth game of the season before the Hornets hit their stride. The next three games resulted in Charlotte victories by scores of 120-105, 124-97, and 130-111. The standard spread for this game is set at 3.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook. However, I think this has a chance to get ugly in the Hornets favor and am pushing the spread to -5.5 in favor of the youthful Hornets team.
The Magic’s offense looks clunky at times, and they need to generate more offensive possessions to have a chance. Wendell Carter Jr. is tied for a team-high 2.1 offensive rebounds per game and is averaging 7.4 rebounds overall. He led the team with a team-high 11 rebounds in the play-in game against the Sixers and tallied 8+ rebounds in two of the three matchups he was available for against the Hornets during the regular season. Moussa Diabate is also considered questionable for this matchup due to hip soreness. One would think the Hornets make every effort to have their top rebounder available, given the win-or-go-home circumstances. But if Diabate is unavailable or limited, the pathway to Carter Jr. pulling in boards becomes even clearer. Expect Carter Jr. to lead the charge on attacking the glass and pull in at least eight rebounds as he has in 36 total games already this season.
It has been a stellar rookie season for Kon Knueppel, posting averages of 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. The Duke product has shot 42.5% from beyond the three-point arc on 7.9 perimeter shots per game. Knueppel knocked down at least three three-pointers in 53 games this season. He struggled greatly in the opening play-in matchup, shooting 0-for-6 from beyond the three-point arc, and was even benched during the home stretch of the matchup. Knueppel was only held without a three-pointer in three of his 81 games played in the regular season, and don’t expect the Magic to be able to generate as much defensive disruption as the Erik Spoelstra-led game plan. He knocked down four three-pointers in two of the four games played against the Magic during the regular season, and I am backing Knueppel to get back on track with at least three long-range shots tonight.
The one player who showed up for the Magic in the opening play-in matchup was Desmond Bane. The prized offseason addition finished with a game-high 34 points, and knocking down four three-pointers in the process. Bane was brought in with the goal of fixing Orlando’s spacing issues. He shot 39.1% on three-point attempts this year, averaged 2.0 made three-pointers per game, and knocked down at least two perimeter shots in 46 games. The Hornets attempt the second-most three-point attempts in the league and rank 18th in opponents’ three-point percentage. He knocked down three three-pointers in two of the four matchups with Charlotte this year. Expect Bane to do his best to even out the three-point battle in the matchup and knock down a pair of perimeter shots as he fights to keep the season alive.
