We are about to be halfway through the latest season of Rick and Morty, which is just as edgy and out-there as usual. Sam Connon breaks down everything you need to know before Season 9 Episode 5 of the animated sci-fi series premieres on Adult Swim, then streams on HBO Max and Hulu.
Rick and Morty Season 9 is about to hit its midpoint, and the series is leaning just as much into its signature raunchy humor and goofy sci-fi concepts as it is destructive relationships and depression. It remains Adult Swim’s biggest cash cow, especially with Smiling Friends coming to a close earlier this year, making it a flagship show for animation fans everywhere.
If you are ready to tune in for the titular duo’s next adventure, here is everything you need to know before Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 5 drops:
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 5 will premiere on Adult Swim at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 21. The episode, which is titled Jer Bud, will have a runtime around 22 minutes. It will be available to stream on HBO Max or Hulu, but not until Monday, July 6. Episodes are hitting streaming on a three-week delay, so Episode 2 will be the one arriving on HBO Max and Hulu on Monday, June 22.
As was the case with the past seven seasons, Season 9 will be 10 episodes long. It will run through the finale on Sunday, July 26.
(Warning: Spoilers for Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 4 ahead.)
Rick and Morty has had a pretty stable cast over the years, barring Adult Swim cutting ties with co-creator and lead voice actor Justin Roiland in 2023. The two titular roles are now filled by separate people, as they were in Seasons 7 and 8. Here is a look at the recurring cast, as well as who they are playing:
Tom Kenny and Kari Wahlgren have already made multiple voice cameos in Season 9 so far, while other past featured players like Dan Harmon and Keith David have yet to appear. David’s President Curtis has his own spinoff show premiering in July, though, so he may not show up in the mainline series this season. Ed Helms, Rob Riggle, Keegan-Michael Key, Tilda Swinton and Owen Wilson are among the many celebrities who have cameoed this season, but their appearances were likely one-offs. This week, it sounds like Stephen Root might be among the supporting voice actors.
Rick and been about as self-destructive as ever this season, routinely sabotaging his relationship with Morty by bringing in different third parties. He had a multiversal fling with Evil Morty in Episode 1, got too attached to his vacation planet in Episode 2, started a feud with a petty martial artist in Episode 3 and built a multi-factor authentication companion for his grandson in Episode 4. None of that is too new to the series, but that type of plot structure has been a little more frequent in the early goings of Season 9.
Based on the lookahead to Season 9 Episode 5, we could be getting another Jerry episode. The preview shows Rick sending Morty through a portal for a one-week vacation with some friends. Meanwhile, Jerry takes a Worry Worm that he gets from Space Beth before heading off to a job interview. The episode’s synopsis is as follows:
“Man’s best friend, brother.”
Rick and Morty Season 9 Episode 5 will premiere at 11 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 21. The next five episodes will come out once per week at the same time.
Rick and Morty airs on the Adult Swim cable channel. Episodes are available the next day on HBO Max and Hulu, although the streaming premieres are on a three-week delay.
Adult Swim renewed Rick and Morty for Season 10 back in 2023, then through Season 12 in 2024. That will take the show through at least 2029, per Variety. There is also a President Curtis spinoff show slated to come out later in July 2026.
