The villa’s strongest Day 1 couple completely implodes, Ally faces an impossible decision between Jimmy P. and Hashim, and two surprisingly stable pairs emerge before the Perfect Match finale.
We’re down to the final episode of Perfect Match Season 4. And we just had a major shakeup for two Day 1 couples.
When does the Perfect Match Season 4 finale drop?
The season finale, Episode 8, of Perfect Match Season 4 comes out on Wednesday, May 27, at 3 a.m. ET/midnight PT.
After all the drama of last week’s two-episode drop, which couple is looking like a perfect match? And which is looking like a match made in hell? Check out my thoughts below.
Perfect Match Episodes 6-7 Recap and Analysis
(Warning: Spoilers ahead.)
- We have to start with DeMari and Marissa. Last week, I noted that these two went from the clear strongest couple in the early part of the season to having a bumpy road ahead. Well, in this set of episodes they veered completely off the road. After dealing with the fallout of the mixers — DeMari seeing and fighting with his ex, Bri, and Marissa admitting she kissed Weston — it seems like they’re good, with DeMari saying he couldn’t have asked Marissa to handle his frustrations with Bri any better. However, when they each get pulled for dates with Kayla and Weston, respectively, the wheels fall off and this couple becomes a train wreck that no one can look away from all night. Both have what seem like strong dates with new partners, but of the two Marissa is still locked in with DeMari, while he is more open to having more conversations with Kayla. He never really gets to do that, however, as he and Marissa spend the majority of the evening following their dates arguing loudly, with everyone taking notice. DeMari thinks their fight about Marissa interrupting him and her wanting more grace in light of her ADHD is covering for something else, and after an exhausting night of fighting costs both their other options Marissa admits to feeling jealousy and possessiveness of DeMari. After Kayla tells off DeMari, confirming there is nothing between them because he ignored her all night to keep fighting with Marissa, I was kind of shocked to see Marissa come up to him and ask him if he was upset. Of course he was upset, and it almost made it feel as though she was doing this intentionally all night to make it so that she was his only option. I’m not saying definitively that’s the case, but it could be one interpretation. Assuming positive intent, however, it’s clear that no matter what feelings the two have for each other, by the end, they’re emotionally exhausted and wrung out. Somehow, against all logic and better judgment, they wind up matching up. They look absolutely miserable as they head back to their room and Marissa comes to the decision that she wanted to walk out with her perfect match and at this point it’s not DeMari, so she’s just going to leave the following day. Honestly, I’m glad we won’t have another episode of these two going round and round (assuming she follows through on leaving) and were it not for the premise of this show there is no way this couple would still be together amid all these communication issues. I hate to say it, because I liked her on her season of Love Is Blind, but it feels like Marissa really kind of self-sabotaged here with this relationship. There doesn’t feel like a villain here, but it’s clear these two need to call it quits.
- The other major shift involved the Ally-Jimmy P.-Hashim love triangle. Sparks flew between Ally and Hashim during the mixer, which proves that Jimmy might have stepped in it by not agreeing to close things off with Ally when he had the chance. Of course Hashim winds up kissing his way into the house as part of the kissing challenge and he takes Ally on the date. Were it not for the Marissa-DeMari mess, the drama that follows involving Ally would have been the most annoying part of the episode. She simply cannot make a decision between Jimmy and Hashim. She’s dealing with what she calls “crippling indecisiveness” and is looking for someone, ANYONE to make this decision for her. At multiple points she even muses going home herself so as to not make the decision. She notes that her head and her heart are not in agreement, with interestingly her heart pulling for Jimmy and her head for Hashim. I would not have expected that, given that her main issue with Jimmy is she wanted to feel like he was pursuing her more strongly. Now Jimmy is left feeling that he wants Ally to want him, and admits that he’s hurt that the decision between him and Hashim wasn’t a no-brainer (which makes Sophie laugh out loud in a rude, but relatable moment). Ultimately, after several back and forths, Jimmy makes the decision and decides to walk away, with Ally seemingly happy to have the decision taken off her plate. Jimmy ultimately says he feels a little betrayed, but despite the mess that was the end of this love triangle I don’t have too much sympathy for him. I think Ally is right to feel as though he was never chasing her in the same way she was chasing him and he did leave the door open heading into the mixer. And he really can’t be upset that she kissed Hashim there considering, as she points out, he had just been kissing Kassy during their date the day before. Either way, Ally seemingly gets over it quick making out with Hashim multiple times. I’m not sure this is a perfect match, but the Jimmy P-Ally relationship seemingly had run its course, so I’m glad it’s over.
Those two couples really sucked up most of the oxygen in these episodes, so I’ll try to keep it brief discussing everyone else.
- The fallout of the DeMari-Marissa mess is that Weston and Kayla ultimately chose to just pair up together rather than wait for DeMari and Marissa to make their decisions. Neither wanted to be a No. 2 option, with Weston continually making the analogy of putting food on the table and people will either choose to eat it or not. OK, sure, you do you Weston. With both getting increasingly frustrated, Kayla says she is done chasing men and Weston says to let him chase her instead. After barely talking in this episode, the duo decides to match up, with Weston again making a weird food analogy about how Kayla is spicy and sweet like a Sour Patch Kid (there’s no spicy there, but whatever). This feels like a match of convenience more than anything else, but what do I know?
- Speaking of a match of convenience … Natalie and Yamen, everybody! They’re pretty much content to watch everything unfold, with Natalie at one point remarking to Yamen that they weren’t a part of any drama. And that is pretty much my issue with this couple — at this point, they feel like simple observers who are happy to be in the house rather than a couple actually in the running to win the whole thing. They’ve never really left the friend zone, from what I have seen, and I would be shocked if they won it all and were declared a perfect match.
- On the other end of the spectrum is Dave and Sophie, who I went from feeling lukewarm about when they matched up to feeling like they have a legit connection. Dave was notably the most willing participant among the men during the mixer, but he says ultimately those kisses were boring and he missed her. Sophie admits that none of the other men make her feel the way that Dave does, and they both think the pairing allows them the space to just be their quirky selves. And amidst all the drama, they’re thick as thieves enjoying a chuckle at some of the ridiculousness of it all, almost like the Perfect Match equivalent of Stadler and Waldorf from the Muppets. Only with kissing involved. Uh … getting back on track … I actually think if I had to rank the remaining couples, this pair would be my No. 2 in the villa. They are second only to …
- … Jimmy S. and Alison. I’ve made no secret of the fact that I find Jimmy S. to be a pretty hard watch and remain flabbergasted by the impact he’s had with the ladies. But there is no denying that he and Alison seem pretty true to each other and locked in, with legitimate feelings growing between the two. Both were willing to be labeled “boring” for not getting into the potential fun of the mixers, and both have reinforced their trust in the other through their actions. They haven’t really fought, they haven’t stepped on any rakes and despite his personality they’re actually carrying themselves in a pretty mature manner. This looks like the couple in the driver’s seat to win it all.
So, with scant time left in the villa what else can happen? Well, if the preview is to be believed somehow DeMari may pivot back to his ex, Bri, who he had a major fight with in Episode 6 (but with whom he also shared a passionate kiss during the kissing challenge). And it looks like there’s still plenty of other drama to come — from accusations of pre-show messaging to a bit of kiss and tell. Either way, strap in, things could get a little bumpy because there is no such thing as a perfect match, is there?
What is Perfect Match?
Perfect Match is a reality dating show hosted by Love Is Blind‘s Nick Lachey where singles from across reality TV pair up, compete in challenges designed to test their compatibility and have the chance to “wreak havoc on other couples or set themselves up on a date with a cute newbie.”
A competition win gives couples the chance to head to the Boardroom and play matchmaker … or match breaker. Contestants can do this by bringing in new singles and sending them on a date with a member of an existing couple — either with good intentions or in a bid to sow chaos and weaken competing couples. One member of the winning couple could even choose to set themselves up with one of the new singles if they’re looking to play the field a bit.
Netflix notes that Season 4 will feature personalities from its stable of shows, including Love Is Blind, Temptation Island and new entry Age of Attraction, as well as other familiar faces from across the dial.
The winners receive an all-expenses paid “pre-honeymoon,” assuming that they can stay together long enough to take the trip — sorry, Lucy and Daniel! That being said, you don’t always have to be the “winners” to win the season. Season 3 runner-ups Ollie Sutherland of Love Is Blind UK and AD Smith of Love Is Blind not only remained together after leaving the villa, but they have since gotten engaged and had their first child.
