Sean Barnard gives his top DraftKings MLB Pick6 plays and projections for Monday’s nine-game slate.
Nine games will take place across Monday’s MLB slate. The season is over one-third of the way through, and the standings are beginning to take shape. Tonight’s slate will begin with a 6:40 p.m. ET matchup between the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, and build out to a 9:40 doubleheader between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, and the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners.
There are plenty of ways to get in on the action on DraftKings. One of the more unique ways to play this year is with Pick6 Fantasy Baseball!
Let’s take a look at my top Pick6 plays for Monday’s action. You simply choose whether each set statistic will be more or less than the set number. With the stage set, here are my top picks on today’s MLB slate.
The Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers will open today’s MLB slate with Griffin Jax starting. It has been an interesting trajectory for the 31-year-old, who opened the season as the expected closer for the Rays. After struggling greatly in the late-inning role, Jax was shifted to the starting rotation and has settled in to be an impact performer for Tampa Bay. He has made six starts for the team, and it is worth noting that he started his career as a starting pitcher as well.
Since settling into the starting role again, Jax has posted a 1.71 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and tallied 17 strikeouts across 21 innings pitched. He tallied six strikeouts across five innings in his start on May 19, and had tallied three strikeouts across 2.0 innings in his most recent start. Jax is facing a Tigers team that is striking out at the 10th-highest rate, averaging 8.58 K’s per game.

It has been an incredible stretch of baseball from James Wood. The Washington Nationals star is up to 16 home runs on the season with a .272 batting average and .960 OPS, while leading all of baseball with 52 runs and leading the National League with a .411 OBP. He is hitting .389 with four home runs and boasting a 1.167 OPS across the past two weeks alone. Wood has recorded a hit in 13 of his past 16 games and tallied more than 1.5 total bases in nine of these matchups.
The Nationals will face Sandy Alcantara and the Miami Marlins tonight. It has been an ugly start to the season for Alcantara, who enters with a 4.66 ERA. He has allowed six or more runs in three of his five starts in May, with his ERA increasing from 3.04 to 4.66 across this stretch. He has given up 14 runs and five home runs over his past two starts alone. The former Cy Young winner has allowed nine home runs in 12 outings this season. Wood is a career 2-for-6 against Alcantara, with a double. Wood ranks in the 100th percentile in xSLG, hard-hit rate, and barrel rate. He is playing some of the best baseball of his career.

In his second MLB season after throwing just 43.1 innings as a rookie, Chase Burns is flashing some legitimate star potential in Cincinnati. The 23-year-old has made 11 starts this season, holding a 7-1 record with a 1.96 ERA, a 0.96 WHIP, and 72 strikeouts in 64.1 innings pitched. Burns delivered a quality start in all four outings in May, posting an overall 0.72 ERA, a 0.72 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 25 innings across the month.
Burns throws hard and is capable of blowing it past hitters at a regular rate. But he also has a slider that opposing hitters are batting just .133 against and whiffing on 47% of their swings. He is facing a Royals lineup that is averaging the 10th fewest strikeouts per game (8.02). However, they are riding a six-game losing streak and coming off 12 strikeouts in their previous game. Burns has tallied more than 7.5 strikeouts in back-to-back starts and in five starts this season, as well as seven or more in eight starts. Facing a struggling Royals’ offense, expect him to get whiffs at a high rate and continue his impressive stretch of play.

It has been a breakout season for Jordan Walker, who is already just one home run shy of his career high. The 24-year-old is posting slash lines of .290/.357/.551 with a .909 OPS on the season. He will look to build off this strong stretch against Jacob deGrom tonight. While deGrom has had an impressive career, there are some concerns this late into his career.
So far this season, deGrom is allowing a 46.2% hard-hit rate, and the number leaped to 51.2% in May. He is allowing a 57.9% hard-hit rate over the last week. This is a positive sign for Walker’s outlook, as he has tallied 11 of his 15 home runs against right-handed pitchers this year. He is slashing .305/.368/.561 with a .929 OPS against right-handed pitching compared to .240/.321/.520 with a .841 OPS against left-handed pitching.

While he has cooled off a bit from his stellar start to the season, it has been nice to see Mike Trout turn back the clock a bit. The three-time MVP is slashing .242/.410/.493 with a .903 OPS on the season. He is also slugging an impressive .536 across the last week. Trout will be licking his chops to add to this when facing the Colorado Rockies tonight.
Kyle Freeland will take the mound for the Rockies tonight. The 33-year-old enters with an 8.08 ERA across his nine starts and has allowed 12 home runs already this season. Trout has only faced off with Freeland nine times in his career, but has tallied a double and a home run in these chances. Right-handed hitters are hitting .331 against Freeland this year with a .614 slugging percentage.

Emmet Sheehan will take the ball for Los Angeles, and he has largely been a weak spot in the Dodgers’ stellar pitching staff. Sheehan has a 4.70 ERA with nine home runs allowed in 10 starts.
It has been a solid start to the season for Ketel Marte. The three-time All-Star is slashing .262/.318/.452 with a .771 OPS. He has been especially hot over his past two weeks, hitting .407 with a 1.174 OPS, four home runs, and nine extra-base hits. The two-time Silver Slugger is up to nine home runs on the season, with seven of these coming against right-handed pitching. Marte is 1-for-2 against Sheehan in his career, with his lone hit being a home run. With Marte in strong form and Sheehan struggling, back the Diamondbacks star to tally more than 1.5 total bases tonight.
