Perfect hitting weather tonight in a hitter-friendly ballpark, as the Athletics will host the Cardinals at Sutter Health Park. The wind will be blowing out with the temperature in the 80s. That isn’t good news for Andre Pallante, tonight’s starter for the Cardinals. He’s allowed a home run in five straight starts, which has helped contribute to his 4.34 ERA with a 4.45 xERA and a 4.83 FIP. His walks have also been an issue, as he owns a 3.8 BB/9 and has walked at least three hitters in four of his seven starts. At home, the Athletics have been one of the highest-scoring teams, averaging over five runs per game, which is the sixth-best in the league. With a weak bullpen behind Pallante, I like the Athletics to score at least six tonight.
Soto has been quiet at the plate lately, but I like this matchup against Jack Flaherty. Despite a career-high 11.1 K/9, Flaherty has been a mess overall. He owns a 5.56 ERA with an xERA of 4.75 and a 6.8 BB/9. The walks have been a major issue, and the majority of them are going to lefties with a 20% BB%. He throws a ton of four-seam fastballs, over 48% of the time, and opposing hitters have tagged it for a .373 wOBA. Soto has been excellent against that pitch this season, owning a .412 wOBA and a .312 ISO. This sets up as a great spot for him to get back on track.
This outs total feels high for Gore, who has gone over this outs total once this season. Gore has gone under in seven of his eight starts, with the only time he’s gone over was back on April 3 against the Reds. He hasn’t been particularly sharp either, allowing at least three runs in four straight starts. On the season, Gore has a 5.18 ERA with an xERA of 4.15 and a 43% hard-hit rate.
The Diamondbacks are a tough matchup for Gore, who is a heavy four-seam fastball thrower. Throwing that pitch 45% of the time, tonight’s expected Diamondbacks lineup combines for a .406 wOBA and a .281 ISO against that pitch. Gore has also been struggling with his command, issuing at least three walks in five of his eight starts. The D-Backs lineup has shown patience at the plate, and this lineup has a combined 11% BB% against lefties. With all these factors combined, I believe he’ll go under this outs total for the eighth time this season.
