Andrew Abbott is set to take the mound tonight for the Reds against the Cubs. It’s been a very tough start for Abbott, who has a 5.97 ERA with an xERA of 5.20 and a 4.93 FIP. His strikeout numbers are down, walks are up, and opposing hitters are making a lot of contact. Both sides of the plate have hit him hard, but lefties in particular have been a nuisance. They’ve tagged him for a .475 wOBA with a 5.64 FIP. The first time through the batting order has also been a major issue. Teams have scored 12 of the 23 total runs off Abbott, along with four of the five home runs he’s allowed.
Once Abbott departs, he’ll give way to a Reds bullpen that’s been getting destroyed lately. Over the last week, they’ve combined to throw 27.1 innings and have a 9.22 ERA with an xERA of 7.34 and a 6.18 FIP. The 7.5 BB/9 over that span is the highest in the league, along with the ERA and xERA. This should be a great spot for the Cubs offense.
Some hitters just own certain pitchers. Jackson Merrill can say that when he faces Logan Webb and the numbers back it up. In his career, Merrill has 17 plate appearances against Webb and has 10 hits, including three for extra bases. Merrill has continued success against sinkers, which is Webb’s main pitch. When facing that pitch overall, Merrill has a .370 wOBA with a .281 ISO, both of which are among the best of tonight’s expected Padres lineup. Webb still hasn’t found much consistency since his Opening Day blunder against the Yankees and currently owns a 4.30 ERA with an xERA of 4.42 and only a 7.7 K/9.
I think we’re going to see a lot of offense early in this Brewers and Cardinals game. Brandon Sproat will oppose Andre Pallante in St. Louis. Sproat has bounced in and out of the rotation already and hasn’t seen much success as a starter. When he starts, he owns a 6.98 ERA, a 6.71 FIP, and a .397 wOBA. His first time through the order is also a tough stat for him, owning an 8.22 ERA in that instance. Pallante is a regression candidate, indicated by his 3.73 ERA, an xERA of 4.41, and a 4.67 FIP. This is a sneaky spot for the over to hit through the first five innings.
