A major character just perished in the Battle of the Gullet. Find out who died in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1.
After a somewhat uneventful Season 2, House of the Dragon came out swinging in Season 3. Episode 1 featured the Battle of the Gullet, notoriously the most bloody conflict in the history of Westeros. HOTD spent the entirety of its prior season building towards the Gullet, and our patience was rewarded on Sunday night, as a major character kicked the bucket. Find out who died in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 below.
Prince Jacaerys Velaryon died during the Battle of the Gullet in House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1. Jacaerys’ dragon, Vermax, was shot down by the Triarchy fleet. While Jace was able to initially survive Vermax’s fall, he was fatally shot by enemy soldiers with crossbows. Jacaerys recognized that a trap was potentially being set for Rhaenyra at the Gullet and she was planning to put herself in serious danger, so he ordered Ser Lorent to lock her in her chambers and instead flew to the battle himself. This decision may have ultimately saved his mother’s life, but it cost Jace his own.
Besides Jacaerys, Admiral Sharako Lohar was also killed by Alyn of Hull, Lord Corlys Velaryon’s illegitimate son. Thousands of soldiers on both sides between the Velaryon fleet and the Triarchy were killed during the Battle of the Gullet.

Yes, in Fire & Blood, Jacaerys Velaryon suffers a virtually identical death at the hands of the Triarchy during naval combat in the Battle of the Gullet.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2 will likely feature the fallout of the Battle of the Gullet. After hearing about the death of her son, Rhaenyra will almost certainly move to join the attack personally and take King’s Landing.
