Breaking down Monday’s WNBA matchup between the Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky, including a best bet on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Neither of these teams has won in a while, but don’t let the losing streaks fool you. The Connecticut Sun and Chicago Sky have both been playing more competitive basketball lately than their records suggest, which makes Monday night’s matchup a little more interesting than a glance at the standings would indicate.
Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET, with Chicago listed as a 3.5-point favorite and the total sitting at 169.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Let’s get into it!
The Sky have lost five straight games, but they’ve also been a few possessions away from ending that streak multiple times. Chicago lost its last two games by a combined two points, taking both Dallas and New York down to the wire. What’s been surprising is how well the offense has played recently. The Sky are averaging 97.7 points per game over their last three contests, the third-best mark in the league during that stretch, while posting the fourth-best offensive rating. Sydney Taylor has been a huge reason why, averaging 24.0 points over her last three games while shooting incredibly efficiently. Skylar Diggins continues to provide steady scoring and leadership, and Kamilla Cardoso is coming off a 26-point performance against Dallas. Cardoso remains the biggest matchup advantage on the floor, continues to dominate inside, and gives Chicago an interior presence Connecticut will have trouble matching for four quarters.
The Sun haven’t been playing terrible basketball either. Connecticut is 2-15 and has lost seven straight, but the offense has quietly improved. The Sun are coming off a 97-point performance against Toronto and own the eighth-best offensive rating in the league over their last three games. Leila Lacan, Brittney Griner, Kennedy Burke, and Aneesah Morrow have all contributed during that stretch, helping Connecticut generate much more consistent offense than it did earlier in the season. The problem remains the other end of the floor.
Connecticut owns one of the worst defensive ratings in the league over its last three games, and that’s largely why the losses keep piling up. The Sun have managed to stay competitive, but when games get tight late, they haven’t been able to get the stops they need. That’s really the difference between these teams right now. Both are struggling to close games, both have been more competitive than their records suggest, and both offenses are trending upward. Chicago simply has the better matchup pieces, particularly with Cardoso inside, and has already beaten Connecticut once this season.
Both teams have played better recently than their records indicate, but Chicago has the stronger offensive form and the biggest matchup advantage in Kamilla Cardoso. If the Sky continue scoring at their recent pace, they should have enough to cover.
