Bryan Armetta breaks down Friday night’s episode, including which islander was this season’s second to be dumped from the villa.
A surprise recoupling came as a major surprise last night on Love Island. In its aftermath, another member of the season eight cast was dumped in the span of a week. Let’s break down Friday’s stunning departure, along with what it means for the villa going forward.
Major spoilers for Love Island USA Season 8 Episode 9 below.
Beatriz was dumped from the villa after a surprise recoupling in episode nine. Faced with a choice to partner up with her or Melanie, Corbin chose the latter.
It’s a shocking exit for someone that had been involved in so much of the early narrative this season. Her departure comes after original partner Sean left back on Sunday during the season’s first recoupling.
Beatriz had found some chemistry with one of Love Island’s first bombshells, Gabriel. However, he’s been drifting further and further away from her this week. That includes hooking up with not one, but two new bombshells, Sol and Jen.
There were other signs that the Beatriz-Gabriel relationship was on the rocks. During Friday’s challenge, the latter chose to make out with bombshell Caleb, and seemed to really enjoy it. That bold move left the Brazilian surprised, to say the least.
Post-challenge, the couple got together for another chat. Beatriz wanted to make sure that everything was all good, especially since Gabriel seemed mad during the challenge. He chalked it up to a lack of communication, and she didn’t think hooking up with Caleb would be a big deal. Gabriel was adamant that he didn’t share any connection in the villa stronger than his with Beatriz.
Then, things got real in a hurry. Host Ariana Madix made her return to the villa, an ominous sign for the remaining islanders. The power tonight would be handed over to America. In other words, viewers had been voting on who they thought the three new bombshells should couple up with. That meant three different couples would get broken up, leaving a trio of islanders single and vulnerable.
Caleb was first, chosen by the public to couple up with Kenzie. Not a shock by any means, given how the two had been getting close. Next was Jen, picked to get with Gabe. It was a bit out of nowhere, even if the two had gotten together earlier this week. Even Jen herself was surprised by the vote. To wrap things up, Sol was paired with Sincere. This felt more about the latter than the former; he’s been having chemistry issues with Melanie all season.
In the aftermath of this week’s vote, we had three single players: Beatriz, Corbin and Melanie. However, we weren’t done yet. Due to there being more women than men, Corbin was safe. Not only that, he was given a crucial choice: save one girl by coupling up with them. Ultimately, he decided to pick the more volatile, but less attached, Melanie. As a result, Beatriz’s time on Love Island was over.
At the end of the day, Beatriz was a victim of bad luck more than anything. It felt like LI viewers were struggling to find a match for Jen, who hasn’t made the strongest connections. Her biggest moment of the season so far was hooking up with none other than Gabriel. Corbin made the strategic move, choosing Melanie due to her declining relationship with Sincere.
It was a perfect storm of bad luck for Beatriz, someone that most fans didn’t expect to leave so soon. The Paralympian left with her head held high, telling her fellow islanders not to cry over her departure. Her absence is sure to have a ripple effect in the coming days on Love Island.
