Bill Yin breaks down his prediction and pick for tonight’s NBA playoff game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets.
The Lakers will host the Rockets for Game 5 of the NBA Playoffs tonight at 10:00 PM EST. The Lakers have seized control of this series with a commanding 3-1 lead. The Lakers will be without Luka Doncic and have listed Austin Reaves as Questionable. The Rockets have listed Kevin Durant Out.
The Lakers are 4.5-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook with the total for this game set at 208.5 points.
The Lakers still have control of the series at 3-1, but Game 4 made the margin feel a lot thinner than things look. Los Angeles won the first three games by leaning into late-game shot-making, defensive discipline, and just vintage LeBron James, including his 29/13/6 Game 3 performance that helped push the Lakers through overtime. Like fine wine. But Game 4 was a step backward for the Lakers as Houston forced 24 turnovers and scored 30 points off those mistakes while dragging James into one of his roughest postseason games ever: 10 points on 2/9 shooting with eight turnovers. The Lakers also did their best Houston Rockets impression by shooting just 5/22 from three, which frankly, was just ugly to watch. With Doncic still out due to a left hamstring strain and Austin Reaves questionable with a left oblique strain, Los Angeles may again need Marcus Smart, Luke Kennard, Rui Hachimura and Deandre Ayton to keep the offense alive outside of LeBron’s individual prowess. If Reaves plays, even in a limited role, his ball-handling and shot creation could swing the pendulum. As JJ Redick so succinctly put it, this LA team needs to look for a kill tonight.
Houston’s Game 4 win was the first time the Rockets fully imposed their identity in this series. Amen Thompson controlled tempo with 23 points and seven assists, Tari Eason gave Houston a big two-way push with 20 points and five steals, and Reed Sheppard’s 4/7 shooting from three finally gave the Rockets the downtown scoring they had been missing. The series is 3-1, but Houston has not been buried possession by possession. The Rockets are only down one point in aggregate scoring through four games. That keeps this matchup dangerous, especially if they continue to turn pressure defense, offensive rebounding and transition chances into cheap offense. The issue is still half-court reliability. Kevin Durant, the man they brought in to produce half court offense, remains out with a left ankle sprain, while Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams are also out. Houston is asking Thompson, Sheppard, Eason, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Sengun to create enough offense without the expected structure. Sengun has been the steadiest frontcourt hub, averaging 22.8 PPG, 10.3 RPG and 4.8 APG in the series, but Houston likely needs another spike game from its younger perimeter group to extend this series to take it back home for Game 6.
Houston has the defensive pressure and rebounding profile to make this uncomfortable for Los Angeles again, especially after seeing how much trouble it caused by speeding up LeBron in Game 4. But the Rockets’ Game 4 formula also required everything to go right: 24 Lakers turnovers, a quiet LeBron game, and a cold L.A. shooting night from deep. They’re still likely to cover here given how close the point differential is in this series overall, and we can expect the Rockets to put up a tough fight with their backs against the wall.
