Sam Connon takes you through his preview, prediction and pick for Monday’s series opener between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers.
The Houston Astros (23-31) and Texas Rangers (24-28) are set to face off on Monday night, going head-to-head in Arlington. The series-opening AL West showdown will get started at 7:05 p.m. ET.
The Astros are 1.5-run road favorites, although they have +104 moneyline odds, and the total has been set at 8 runs. Japanese rookie Tatsuya Imai will take the bump for Houston, while former top draft pick Kumar Rocker is getting the nod for Texas. Here is a preview of the divisional matchup, featuring odds and lines from DraftKings Sportsbook.
Astros manager Joe Espada has been a mainstay in hot seat discussions for a while now, thanks in large part to his team’s back-breaking 6-18 skid in April. Houston has stabilized for the time being, however, going 12-11 since. The Astros have now won four of their last five and are fresh off a three-game road sweep over the Chicago Cubs. Houston allowing just 11 runs in its last five games has a lot to do with its upward trajectory, even if its 5.17 ERA on the season remains the worst in the MLB. The Astros’ offense, meanwhile, ranks eighth in the MLB in OPS+ and fifth in baseball in home runs. Still, the lineup’s 4.31 runs per game are a hair below league average.
As for the Rangers, their own offense ranks No. 27 with 3.87 runs per game despite ranking No. 6 in OPS+. Texas does own the No. 7 ERA and No. 5 WHIP in the MLB, though, as well as the best bullpen ERA in the American League at 2.96. The Rangers are returning home after a nine-game road trip that started with a 1-2 record in Houston and ended with an 0-3 showing in Anaheim.
Jake Burger has been the most explosive player in the Rangers’ lineup with his team-high 10 home runs and 34 RBIs, boasting a .929 OPS in the month of May. Second baseman Justin Foscue has also overperformed since earning a promotion to the big leagues a few weeks back, batting .318 with an .890 OPS in 15 games of action. Third baseman Josh Jung leads Texas with an .818 OPS on the season, even after batting .194 with a .512 OPS on the Rangers’ nine-game road trip, while right fielder Brandon Nimmo owns a team-high 1.8 WAR through 50 games.
Houston is currently without its veteran infield duo of Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, both of whom are on the injured list. Yainer Diaz is also banged up, making Christian Vázquez the team’s most reliable catcher. That leaves first baseman Christian Walker and designated hitter Yordan Alvarez as the team’s top sluggers, combining for 29 home runs, 68 RBIs and a 3.9 WAR already. Alvarez, especially, leads all qualified MLB batters with a 1.010 OPS, 183 OPS+, .436 rOBA and 182 Rbat+. But dating back to his 0-for-3 showing against the Rangers on May 17, Alvarez is just 2-for-19 with zero extra-base hits.
When it comes to the pitching matchup, Kumar Rocker has returned to form after a nightmare 2025 campaign in which he put up a 5.74 ERA and -1.0 WAR across 14 starts. Rocker now owns a 3.60 ERA and 0.4 WAR through nine outings in 2026. His last appearance came as a long reliever in Denver, and he proceeded to allow three hits and three walks across 7.2 scoreless frames of work. Tatsuya Imai is not quite as hot, considering he has allowed four homers and nine earned runs between his last two starts. That was after he spent a full month out of the major league rotation due to arm fatigue, as he enters Monday with an 8.31 ERA and -0.5 WAR through his first five career MLB outings.
The Astros have lost each of Imai’s last three starts, while the Rangers have won the last two times Rocker has taken the mound. Of course, boiling a pick down to that kind of small sample size and heavy recency bias isn’t the best strategy, but there are more reasons I like the latter club to defend its home turf. Houston is 11-17 away from home, with Texas boasting an 11-10 record in Arlington. The Rangers also outscored the Astros 9-6 in their series earlier this month, losing the three-game set because of their scoreless and one-run performances in games one and two. Texas also owns a .720 OPS vs. RHP – like Imai – compared to its .605 team OPS against LHP.
When Rocker has gone at least 5.0 innings, he has a 2.08 ERA. He has done so in four of his five home starts this season, so I like him to do it again on Monday. Rocker eating innings takes some pressure off of Texas’ league-best bullpen, too. Look for the Rangers to pitch around Yordan – he leads the MLB with seven intentional walks and has accumulated 12 bases on balls over his last 14 games – and take care of business against the rest of the Astros’ thinned out lineup.
Strong Lean: Yordan Alvarez 1+ Walks (-127)
