Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets ($8,400)
This is what I wrote before Game 1: “Edwards may go a little overlooked on this slate due to the surrounding talent at the position and the recent history. He’s dealt with a knee issue since mid-March, causing him to miss six straight games. To close out April, Edwards only played two games primarily due to injury management. Over his last three games played, Edwards finished with 25, 20 and 28.5 FPTS while playing 23, 26 and 27 minutes. He looked like his normal self last Friday and I expect him to play in the upper-30s to low-40s in this one. The usage rate is 32% on the season and, in three games against Denver during the regular season, Edwards put up 53.5, 61.5 and 40.2 FPTS.” Edwards finished with 49.2 FPTS. Donovan Mitchell (45.8), Jamal Murray (45.8), James Harden (45) and Jalen Brunson (47.2) FPTS all scored fewer. Mitchell and Harden cap each other to some degree while Murray plays alongside Jokic. Brunson has KAT. Edwards is the bonafide alpha of the Timberwolves and I think he has the best chance of a ceiling game.
Other Options: Donovan Mitchell ($8,700), Jamal Murray ($8,600), James Harden ($8,500), Jalen Brunson ($8,200)
Bruce Brown, Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves ($3,900)
Back in 2023, Brown was an instrumental piece for the Nuggets championship run. He averaged 28.4 minutes, 11.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.1 treys, 1.1 steals and 0.6 blocks. The stats don’t jump off the page, but he was an important hub when defenses double-teamed the stars and his versatility on defense was huge. After spending two seasons elsewhere, Denver brought Brown back this season. The numbers are way down from 2023, averaging 24.4 minutes, 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.7 treys and 1.0 steals. He didn’t look like the same player with the same role from two seasons ago. The last three regular season games and Game 1 of the playoffs, that version of Brown looks to be back. He’s put up at least 30 FPTS in three of those contests with the other at 28 FPTS. No one category is standing out, but Brown is chipping in a little something something everywhere.
Other Options: CJ McCollum ($5,900), Josh Hart ($5,500), Immanuel Quickley ($5,300) if he starts, Donte DiVincenzo ($5,000), Christian Braun ($4,600), Max Strus ($4,000)
Karl-Anthony Towns, New York Knicks vs. Atlanta Hawks ($8,300)
Towns get maligned for his lack of defense and toughness, but he remains one of the most skilled big men in the game and complements Jalen Brunson well. Over the last seven games, he’s put up at least 40 FPTS in six with two over 50 FPTS. In Game 1, Towns went for 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three blocks and one steal in 33 minutes.
Other Options: RJ Barrett ($6,600), Dyson Daniels ($6,200)
Collin Murray-Boyles, Toronto Raptors at Cleveland Cavaliers ($4,000)
Here’s what I wrote before Game 1: “It’s a three-headed center monster in Toronto, so the ceiling is capped for all three. In addition, Murray-Boyles is a rookie and how much will he play in the playoffs? Due to his defensive versatility and energy, especially on the glass, around 20 minutes seems viable. He’s not tall at 6-foot-7, but he’s a solid 245 pounds with a 7-foot-2 wingspan. In the last regular season game, he only played 13 minutes and finished with 7.5 FPTS. In the prior six games, though, he put up at least 23 FPTS in all with two over 30 FPTS, despite playing only around 20 minutes a night.” CMB played 20 minutes in Game 1 and contributed 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, good for 24.5 FPTS.
Other Options: OG Anunoby ($5,800), Aaron Gordon ($5,600), Josh Hart ($5,500), Jaden McDaniels ($5,400), Max Strus ($4,000)
Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets vs Minnesota Timberwolves ($12,400)
Here’s what I wrote before Game 1: “Jokic has the highest floor/ceiling combo in the game. Really the only question comes down to roster construction. Can you find enough value to fit him in your lineup?” All he did was put up 25 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and a steal in 40 minutes, good for 62.8 FPTS. Yawn. He’s always in play to go for 70, 80, 90 or even 100 FPTS. Can you find the value to fit him in?
Other Options: Karl-Anthony Towns ($8,300), Onyeka Okongwu ($6,100)
Aaron Gordon, Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves ($5,600)
Gordon is such an important piece for Denver because of his defensive versatility, explosiveness and ability to take advantage of mismatches. It’s been all about health for him this season, and he looked good in Game 1, playing 29 minutes and contributing 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists, good for 31.5 FPTS. He has 40 FPTS upside.
Other Options: Rudy Gobert ($6,000), Collin Murray-Boyles ($3,900)
