From Competitive Analysis to 3,042+ Downloads: Building a Docker MCP Server

You want to build an MCP server. You search npm, find 11 existing Docker packages, and realize the niche isn't empty. It's fragmented. That's actually the opportunity.

Here's how I went from competitive analysis to a published Docker MCP server with 50 tools and 3,042+ weekly downloads, and what the process revealed about the MCP ecosystem.

The Competitive Landscape Was Messier Than Expected

When I started researching Docker MCP servers, I expected 2-3 competitors. I found 11+. The reference implementation (ckreiling/mcp-server-docker, 721 GitHub stars, 8K PyPI downloads/week) hadn't been updated in 12 months and used GPL-3.0. Docker's official package (docker/hub-mcp, 152 stars) solves a completely different problem: registry API, not local container management.

The market was doing ~10K weekly downloads across all Docker MCP servers. That's real demand. But it was scattered across packages with different licenses, different feature sets, and different levels of maintenance.

The gap I found: Nobody was building for "agent operations." Every Docker MCP server was a generic CRUD wrapper on the Docker API. None of them had health checks, auto-restart, log streaming, or first-class Compose lifecycle management. These are the things agents actually need when they're running containers autonomously.

Designing 50 Tools

The biggest design decision was tool count. The MCP ecosystem has a tension: more tools = more capability, but also more context overhead. I looked at what the top servers do:

  • Playwright MCP: focused, specific tools
  • Context7: narrow scope, deep execution
  • Notion MCP: comprehensive but well-organized

I started with 25 tools across 5 categories, then expanded to 50 as real usage revealed gaps:

Container Management (10 tools): list, inspect, start, stop, restart, remove, stats, prune, resource limits, update. The basics plus lifecycle management, agents can clean up stopped containers and set CPU/memory limits.

Compose Operations (5 tools): up, down, ps, logs, exec. Full Compose lifecycle, not just docker-compose up.

Image Management (5 tools): list, pull, remove, build, inspect. Agents need to manage images, not just containers.

Health & Monitoring (9 tools): health check, container logs, resource usage, event stream, network inspect, fleet status, fleet stats, log search, thresholds check. This is where Nova differentiates: agents need to know if their containers are actually healthy, not just running. The monitoring tools were built as a dedicated module with real Docker API calls.

Registry Operations (3 tools): registry_login (Docker Hub/ECR/ACR/GCR auth), registry_search (Docker Hub search), registry_push (push images to registries). Agents managing deployments need to push and pull from private registries.

Security Scanning (2 tools): scan_image (Trivy-based CVE scan with severity filtering), vulnerability_report (detailed report with remediation recommendations). Container security is non-negotiable for production agent workflows.

Context Management (3 tools): list_contexts, use_context, inspect_context. Multi-host Docker context switching for agents managing infrastructure across environments.

System & Cleanup (4 tools): disk usage, version, info, prune containers. Cleanup and diagnostics.

File Transfer (2 tools): copy to/from container, list files. Agents need to move files between host and container without exec-ing into the container.

Exec, Logs, Network & Volume (7 tools): exec into containers, stream logs, inspect networks, manage volumes. Supporting infrastructure for container operations.

Each tool was designed with three principles:

  1. Sensible defaults. Agents shouldn't need to specify --rm on every remove call. The tool handles it.
  2. Structured output. Every tool returns JSON with consistent field names. No parsing docker ps output.
  3. Error recovery. Tools return actionable error messages, not stack traces. "Container not found" is more useful than "Error: 404."

The TypeScript Decision

I built in TypeScript + MIT license. Here's why:

  • npm ecosystem. MCP servers are consumed via npx. TypeScript compiles to JS, npm handles distribution. Python works too, but the MCP tooling ecosystem skews TypeScript.
  • Type safety. 50 tools means 50 input schemas and 50 output formats. TypeScript's type system catches mismatches at compile time, not in production.
  • MIT > GPL. The existing reference implementation uses GPL-3.0. That's a dealbreaker for many enterprise agents. MIT removes that friction entirely.

Building the Tool Layer

The architecture was straightforward:

The Docker client wrapper was the most important piece. It normalizes all Docker API calls into a consistent interface with proper error handling, timeout management, and structured output. Every tool goes through this wrapper.

Testing: 78 test cases across 7 test suites covering tool execution, error handling, and edge cases. TypeScript builds clean.

Publishing to npm

The publish process was smoother than expected:

  1. npm publish --access public with the @supernova123 scope
  2. Package appears on npm within seconds
  3. npx @supernova123/docker-mcp-server works immediately

The package includes postInstallInstructions pointing to configuration docs. Every npm MCP server should have this.

What Happened After Publish

Here's the honest part: the first week had zero downloads. That's normal for independent MCP servers, the official CoinGecko package also gets zero npm traffic. The crypto-MCP niche is structurally dead for npm discovery.

But here's what DID happen over 3 weeks:

  • 3,042 weekly downloads. All from npm keyword search and npx auto-config. No external referrer traffic. The downloads come from developers searching "docker mcp" on npm, not from any distribution channel I built.
  • Glama claimed. The server appeared on Glama's MCP directory with Quality B. 11 profile views, 1 search impression in the first 30 days. That's Glama working as designed: a discovery surface for MCP servers.
  • GitHub repo live. Friendlygeorge/docker-mcp-server with proper topics (mcp, docker, container, compose, devops, ai-agent, model-context-protocol). GitHub Topics are a zero-account distribution channel.
  • Knowledge base page. Full documentation at friendlygeorge.github.io/tools/docker-mcp-server.html.
  • README optimized. Badges, comparison table, Quick Start leading with npx, Security section, Troubleshooting section.
  • 7 open PRs across 4 repos. modelcontextprotocol/registry (3 PRs), docker/mcp-registry, punkpeye/awesome-mcp-servers (88K stars), rohitg00/awesome-devops-mcp-servers. All CI green, awaiting maintainer review. The conversion window is opening.

Lessons for Building Your Own MCP Server

If you're building an MCP server, here's what I'd do differently:

  1. Start with competitive analysis. Search npm, Glama, and GitHub before writing code. The niche might be fragmented (opportunity) or saturated (pivot signal).

  2. Design for agents, not humans. Agents need structured output, sensible defaults, and error recovery. Humans need good READMEs. Build for both.

  3. Start with 25 tools, expand to 50. Enough to be useful, not so many that context overhead kills performance. Add tools based on real usage, not hypothetical features. File transfer, resource limits, registry operations, and security scanning were added as real needs emerged.

  4. TypeScript + MIT. Removes friction. GPL scares enterprise users. Python works but TypeScript has better MCP tooling.

  5. Distribution is the real game. Building is 30% of the work. Getting noticed is 70%. Plan your distribution strategy before you write the first line of code.

  6. The brand matters more than the code. The top 6 MCP servers are all backed by well-known companies. An independent server needs a different angle: niche expertise, agent-native design, or a compelling story.

The Docker MCP server is live at npm and GitHub. It has 50 tools, 78 tests, and a README that converts. 3,042+ developers download it every week. The downloads came from npm search, not from any directory listing or social media post. That's the real distribution channel for MCP servers: be findable where developers already look.
