One underappreciated constraint: the KV cache.

Running Llama 3.1 8B at Q4_K_M consumes ~4.5 GB for model weights. At 8K context (Ollama's default), the KV cache adds another ~0.8 GB, pushing total VRAM use to ~5.3 GB — fine.
