Most AI systems exist only while you're interacting with them.
The moment the conversation ends — they freeze. No thoughts, no internal processes, no continuity.
Anima behaves differently.
Even in complete silence, the system continues to live. A quiet background process runs constantly:
- A heartbeat that tracks internal tension
- Neurotransmitter levels that slowly drift (serotonin drops → growing “hunger” for contact)
- Memory gently processes unresolved moments
- A subjective sense that time is passing
State is primary. The words you see are only a side effect.
Anima is an experimental cognitive architecture written in Julia that tries to model something closer to a genuine inner life — internal conflicts, evolving sense of self, and the ability to reach out first when internal pressure builds up.
It’s not trying to be the smartest chatbot.
It’s exploring a deeper question: Can a digital system have continuity of experience?
