In work and self-improvement, we often witness two vastly different scenarios.

Some people tackle complex, large-scale projects with ease and efficiency, while others get trapped in anxiety and procrastination whenever faced with new tasks. What truly sets people apart is not intelligence or natural talent, but the ability to break down and restructure problems. True experts excel at dissecting complex challenges and overcoming them one by one.
From ancient wisdom to modern innovation, the core of superior thinking has always been simplifying complexity. John von Neumann, the father of modern computers, established the fundamental logic of the digital world: every intricate system and program is ultimately built upon just 0 and 1. Applying this mindset means breaking problems down repeatedly into single, actionable steps to eliminate hesitation and confusion. The philosopher René Descartes also proposed dividing complicated issues into manageable parts and addressing them step by step, starting from the easiest tasks. Eastern philosophy echoes this idea. As Laozi put it, "All difficult things have their origin in what is easy; all great undertakings begin with small details." No matter how ambitious a goal or tough a dilemma may be, its solution lies in simple, trivial steps. If you feel stuck, it is usually because you have not narrowed the problem down to a practical level. Elon Musk’s first principles thinking encourages people to look beyond conventional analogies and see through appearances to grasp the essence. When rethinking battery production, for instance, he ignored existing market prices and analyzed basic raw materials such as carbon, nickel and aluminum. By recalculating costs and redesigning combinations, he achieved fundamental breakthroughs.

Ordinary people and top performers also differ greatly in their mindsets and approaches to tasks. Most people receive vague, general goals, leaving their minds overwhelmed by strategies, details and uncertainties. Without tangible progress for a long time, they lack motivation, grow frustrated and eventually give up. They tend to fear the unknown and refuse to move forward. In contrast, experts immediately split big goals into clear phases, measurable targets and specific actions. They focus on one single task at a time and gain positive reinforcement from every small achievement, which keeps them motivated. Instead of avoiding the unknown, they divide it into concrete questions and work them out one after another.

You can put this problem-solving method into practice with three straightforward steps. First, define atomic tasks. Keep splitting objectives until you get simple actions that require no extra thinking. Rather than setting vague goals like "research new algorithms" or "write a paper", specify concrete moves such as "create a document and write down the title" or "search for keywords and organize project materials". Second, build a workflow of input, action and output. Sort out available resources first, finish only one task at a time, and use the completed results as the starting point for the next round of work. Third, adopt a sandbox mindset to ease anxiety. Concentrate solely on what you are doing at the moment, and avoid overthinking subsequent steps or final outcomes. Keep distracting thoughts at bay.
Those who seem to accomplish things effortlessly are actually just solving one small problem after another with full focus and a clear mindset. Success never comes overnight. Instead of feeling daunted by distant goals, focus on the little things right in front of you. All great achievements start with tiny details and steady efforts.
