AI Made Work Easier: But Something Feels Seriously Off

I’ve been using AI for months now.
Not casually, seriously.
And I’ve started noticing something uncomfortable.

The Observation

Work has become easier.

Much easier.

Things that once took hours now take minutes.

Writing is faster.
Coding is faster.
Research is faster.

There is less friction in almost everything.

And on paper, that should feel like progress.

But strangely…

Something feels off.

Not in the technology.

In me.

Breaking the Expectation

We tend to assume easier work means better work.

Less struggle.
More efficiency.
Higher productivity.

What’s not to like?

But I’ve started questioning that assumption.

Because difficulty was never just a burden.

It was doing something invisible.

It was sharpening judgment.

Building patience.

Forcing understanding.

And when AI removes too much of that…

Something important may disappear with it.

The Insight

I’ve realized the problem isn’t that AI makes work easier.

The problem is that ease can quietly reduce engagement.

When solutions arrive instantly:

  • We inspect less
  • We wrestle less
  • We reflect less

And without noticing it, work starts becoming more mechanical.

Faster, yes.

But thinner.

That’s the strange part.

The output improves.

But the inner experience can feel diminished.

What Feels Off

It took me a while to name it.

What feels off is not productivity.

It’s the loss of cognitive tension.

That moment of:

  • not knowing
  • struggling
  • figuring something out the hard way

That used to produce insight.

Now AI often jumps straight to the answer.

And sometimes…

It skips the thinking that makes the answer meaningful.

The Deeper Shift

This may be the hidden tradeoff of the AI era.

We are optimizing work for convenience.

But not always for depth.

And those are not the same thing.

Convenience removes resistance.

Depth often comes from resistance.

That tension matters.

Because much of the expertise was forged there.

The Reflection

I still believe AI is extraordinary.

It has made me faster in countless ways.

But the more I use it, the more I feel this:

Ease is not automatically progress.

Sometimes, friction was carrying a value we didn’t recognise.

And if we remove too much of it…

Work may become easier, while thinking becomes weaker.

That’s what feels off.

And I suspect many people feel it too, even if they haven’t named it yet.
