I'm sorry, Stack Overflow. AI made me forget you existed.

Eleven years of Java, three eras of tooling, and one developer's completely honest reckoning with what we gained -- and quietly lost.

Chapter 1: Kevin saved my life in 2009. He just didn't know it.

I am a fresh Java developer, twenty-something, deeply overconfident, and staring at a BeanCreationException that makes absolutely no sense to me.

I do what every developer from my generation did. Copy the error. Paste into Google. Land on Stack Overflow. The answer is right there -- third result, green checkmark, posted in 2009 by someone named Kevin who had quietly decided to save every confused Java developer who came after him. Kevin was a legend. He would never know it.

I read Kevin's answer. Then I see a comment underneath: "This works but it's actually an antipattern, see this thread."

I click. Obviously I click.

That thread leads to a deep-dive on the Spring container lifecycle. Which leads to someone's blog on dependency injection philosophies. Which somehow ends in a 74-comment war between two developers who have never met but have extremely strong feelings about singleton beans. One of them is named Dave and he is from Ohio and he is absolutely not letting this go.

Two hours later I have not fixed my bug. I have not written a single line of code. But I understand the Spring container, three competing schools of thought on dependency injection, and why Dave in Ohio is genuinely furious about someone else's architecture decisions made in 2007.

I fix the bug in four minutes the next morning.

That two-hour detour was not wasted time. That two-hour detour was the whole education. The bug was just the excuse that got me there.

Stack Overflow never just answered your question. It answered twelve questions you didn't know you had yet. And it charged you nothing except two hours and your ego.

Those were the years I grew up as a developer. Stack Overflow was my university, my rubber duck, my brutally honest professor who left comments like "this is not how Java works" with the quiet confidence of someone who had seen too much. I learned more from getting my answer downvoted than from any textbook I ever opened. Humiliation is an exceptional teacher. It just has a terrible LinkedIn profile.

Chapter 2: Spring Boot arrived. We celebrated. We quietly forgot things.

Back then I was writing Spring XML. Full, verbose, soul-testing Spring XML. Declaring every single bean like I was filling a government loan application -- in triplicate, with justification, praying nothing was misspelled.

Every I typed, I understood exactly why it existed. The verbosity was painful. The understanding was total.

Then Spring Boot arrived and changed everything. Autoconfiguration. Convention over configuration. Things just... worked. Nobody asked why. We were too relieved to ask why. We moved fast and quietly forgot how the wiring worked underneath.

Going from Spring XML to Spring Boot felt like going from cooking your own dal to ordering Swiggy. Same dal. Warmer. Faster. But three years later you quietly realise you've forgotten where the pressure cooker is kept.

Then Lombok. Then reactive streams. Each era faster, each era a little thinner on the understanding side. Usually a fair trade. But a trade nonetheless. We just stopped saying it out loud.

Chapter 3: The whiteboard. The debates. The fingerprints.

But here is something I haven't seen anyone talk about. Something quieter than the tools. Something I only started missing when it was already gone.

The whiteboard.

Not the physical whiteboard -- though yes, that too. I mean the culture around it. The way a hard problem would pull the whole team out of their chairs and into a room, markers uncapped, someone already drawing boxes and arrows before the door was even closed.

The debates that started civil and got loud within ten minutes. The junior developer who said something that seemed wrong but was actually the insight that cracked the whole problem open. The logic that got built not by one person typing a prompt but by five people thinking out loud, disagreeing, crossing things out, redrawing, and landing somewhere none of them could have reached alone.

That logic had fingerprints on it. Everyone in the room owned a piece of it. When it shipped, everyone knew why it was built that way -- because they'd fought for it, argued against it, and eventually believed in it together.

Today I watch teams paste a problem into an AI chat, get a solution in thirty seconds, and ship it. The solution is often good. Sometimes it's great. But nobody in the room fought for it. Nobody crossed anything out. The logic has no fingerprints. It belongs to no one.

When something breaks six months later -- and something always breaks six months later -- nobody truly understands why it was built the way it was. Because the understanding was never really built. It was borrowed. From a model. And models don't come to the postmortem.

The best solutions I've been part of came from rooms where at least two people were wrong before anyone was right. AI skips that part. It goes straight to the answer and quietly removes the journey that made the team smarter.

Chapter 4: Copilot finished my sentence. I felt weird about it.

The first time Copilot finished my function before I finished typing it, I felt something unexpected. Not excitement. Not relief. Something closer to the feeling when autocorrect fixes a word you've been spelling wrong for years and you think -- wait, did I always know the right spelling or did I just stop trying?

AI doesn't make you search. It doesn't drop you into a rabbit hole at 11 PM where you emerge two hours later, bug unfixed, brain inexplicably fuller. It just answers. Immediately. Politely. Confidently. And sometimes completely wrong -- but wrong with such conviction that you almost respect it.

AI is like that one colleague who always has an answer ready. Doesn't matter the question. Fast, fluent, occasionally invented. You know not to fully trust them. But in a deadline crunch you still ask, because they're fast and you're desperate.

I use AI tools every day. I'm not going to perform some nostalgic purity about it. But somewhere in the first year I caught myself reaching for AI before I had even thought about the problem. Not to go faster. Just to avoid the thinking. And thinking is a muscle. Stop using it and it goes quiet without announcing itself. You don't notice it's gone until you need it and it isn't there.

So I made one rule. One line I haven't crossed regardless of deadline:

Learn before you let AI do.

I only let AI write what I already know how to write myself. If I can't read it, review it, and own it -- AI doesn't touch it. Not yet.

Because I've watched what happens otherwise. AI writes the code. Developer ships it. Everything works -- until it's 2 AM, production is down, and you're staring at a function that was generated six months ago. Nobody knows what it does. Nobody knows why it was written that way. It might as well be ancient Sanskrit carved into a server rack.

Why: every developer has lived this exact 2 AM production moment -->
A surgeon who uses robotic tools is still a surgeon. The robot makes them more precise -- it does not replace the ten years of understanding that guides every move. Know the anatomy first. Let AI make you faster. Never let it replace the understanding that tells you where to cut.

Using AI without understanding is letting autocomplete drive your car. It'll get you somewhere. Just hope it doesn't miss an exit -- because you stopped reading road signs three cities ago.

Chapter 5: What I actually miss. And it's not the XML.

I miss being lost on purpose. I miss the seventeen open tabs. I miss reading an answer, disagreeing with it, writing a better one, getting corrected by someone from a timezone I've never visited, and going to sleep slightly more humble and significantly more knowledgeable.

I miss the green checkmark on my accepted answer. It sounds small. It wasn't small. Someone on the other side of the world had a problem. I understood it. I explained it. It helped. That checkmark was proof of something real -- not generated, not suggested, not autocompleted. Mine.

Stack Overflow was a gym. Difficult, occasionally brutal, but you left stronger than you arrived. AI is a very good vending machine. Fast, reliable, zero resistance. I use the vending machine every day. I've just stopped confusing it with exercise.

Chapter 6: Where I actually land. After eleven years.

Every generation of developers has had to decide what they carry forward and what they leave behind. The Spring XML generation moved to Spring Boot and chose whether they still cared about the internals. Most stayed curious even when they didn't have to be. That curiosity is what separated the good ones.

This generation has to make the same choice about AI. Just faster, with higher stakes, and with a tool that is genuinely, seductively, dangerously good at removing the friction -- the rabbit holes, the whiteboard fights, the downvoted answers -- that used to quietly make us better.

The developers who will truly thrive are not the ones who use AI the most. They are the ones who understand enough to use AI well. Who still pull the team to a whiteboard when the problem deserves it. Who still go down the rabbit hole sometimes, just to keep the muscle warm. Because some logic should have fingerprints on it.

The goal was never to write code fast. The goal was always to understand deeply. AI changes the first part. You still have to fight for the second one yourself.

Keep some friction. Let yourself be lost occasionally. Have the debate. Fill the whiteboard. Be wrong in the room before you're right.

Stack Overflow's tab is still open on my browser. It has been open for eleven years. I just don't click it as often as I should.
