Lately, I've been feeling bored with my job. It's not that it's easy or anything, the problems are challenging enough. It's just that I don't find the problems particularly interesting. Part of that is due to the fact that we have really good architecture and design in our services, so it's kind of "just work" to add new features. In principle, that's a good place to be. Certainly better than the alternative. But it also means that all the interesting problems are already solved, and we're just doing standard work now. Challenging, but at the same time kind of boring.

But I found a way today to bring back the fun into my working life. When you can't change your circumstances, you can still change your mindset. And that's what I did. I internally re-branded myself as a "warrior of code".

As a fan of epic fantasy and power metal, I know plenty about heroes and heroic deeds, about warriors and the different kinds of battle they go through. And in my mind, that's what I'm doing today. I'm going to battle with my boredom, with my challenging problems, with my being tired.

In this mindset, every difficulty you have becomes a battle to be fought. And warriors never run from battle. On the contrary, they throw themselves into it with joyful abandon.

I don't know if I'll stick with it, but right now it brings back the fun into a working life that threatened to become tiring and tedious. So next time you don't feel like doing any programming, you don't feel like attending yet another meeting, remember: You're not some ordinary human resource that resolves JIRA-tickets.

No, you my friend, are a warrior of code. Every challenge is a battle to be fought. You fight with all your skills, with all your talent, with all your intelligence and all your will to persevere. And each victory, however small, is to be celebrated and savored.
