A modern guide to using jQuery to style elements without a CSS stylesheet

Gone are the days where three experts are needed for one project. In the age of AI and agents, junior devs should learn to be a powerhouse, a one stop shop, a jack of all trades. What if I told you one tool could implement designs in under 5 minutes.

Web Development: HTML vs CSS vs JavaScript

For my newbies in the web development world, the structure can be a bit confusing. Think of a website like a family home. Let's unpack the big three.

HTML - the contractor: it acts as the structural blueprint, creating the framework by mounting the beams and laying the sheetrock.

CSS - the interior designer: t chooses the paint color, decorative mirror placement, and whether you want wall sconces or floor lamps.

JavaScript - the homeowner: the center of communication. They talk with both the contractor and the designer to ensure the structure and design match the function of the home.*

But what if the homeowner doesn't have the budget to hire a professional designer or the time to learn Figma? That's where jQuery comes in as your DIY BFF.

What Is jQuery & Why Do You Need It?

jQuery is a library. Think of it as a how-to guide for dummies. It gives you a simplified code system that connects your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript all in one place. Instead of writing lengthy JavaScript, jQuery gives you short, readable shortcut codes. And with .css() specifically, you can skip writing a stylesheet altogether and handle your styles directly inside your JavaScript file.

How to Add jQuery:

No setup, no install, and definitely no Figma software

Add this one line of code to your HTML file, right before the closing
