The AI Necklace Nobody Needs: Why Your Next Wearable Will Collect Dust Before Year Two

You're standing in line at a coffee shop, and your AI necklace just transcribed the conversation behind you. The person in front of you is discussing their medical history. You didn't ask for this information. The device captured it anyway, and now it's sitting in some server farm, part of a training dataset you'll never see mentioned in the terms of service.

This isn't hypothetical. I lived it.

Three months ago, I wore an AI-enabled wearable pendant through my daily routine. Not because I believed in it — because a client asked me to evaluate it for a healthcare startup considering integrations. What I found wasn't a glimpse of the future. It was a preview of the most invasive surveillance apparatus ever marketed to consumers with a "wellness" branding.

The Qiita post trending in the Japanese dev community cuts to the core of what nobody's talking about in English: what function would you actually want from an AI device hanging around your neck? The answers are revealing. Nobody's asking for more features. They're asking for features that stop working against them.


The Privacy Paradox Nobody Wants to Acknowledge

Scrolling through the V2EX discussion, I noticed a pattern that Western tech media keeps missing: Chinese developers are approaching AI wearables with a pragmatism that looks like cynicism from the outside but is actually earned wisdom from years of living with surveillance infrastructure.

不想做人 (Bù xiǎng zuò rén): Literally "don't want to act human." In the dev community = platform or device that extracts value from you while returning minimal benefit. Used when AI devices "phone home" with data you didn't consent to.

The Narrative Mirror: Chinese devs have seen this movie before — every "free" service that monetizes attention eventually extracts more than it gives. Western users are 2-3 years away from the same hard-earned skepticism.

The top functions V2EX users wanted from their AI necklace weren't revolutionary: health monitoring, emergency detection, and voice memos. Sounds reasonable, right? Here's what the comments revealed: every single "killer feature" requires the device to be always listening. That's not a feature. That's a bugs-audio-recording-device-while-marketing-it-as-a-product.

My test device (a consumer model, not the prototype) transmitted ambient audio data 14 times per hour during normal use — not for wake word detection, but for "ambient intelligence improvement." I understand the appeal. I've worked 16-hour days where the thought of an AI that "just handles the small stuff" sounded like salvation. But here's what I learned from wearing one: the cognitive load doesn't disappear when you offload it. It just moves. Now I'm managing the anxiety of not knowing what's being recorded, what data's being transmitted, and whether that weird silence during my Zoom call means the device is buffering or buffering me.

Every AI wearable shipped in the last 24 months has been a beta test for a surveillance product with better branding. The ones that survive will be the ones that earn user trust through radical transparency — and none of them are doing that yet.

The idea that AI wearables will "augment human capability" is a lie we tell ourselves to feel better about buying into a monitoring infrastructure.   2. The Responsibility Laundering Problem: AI wearables create a new category of plausible deniability. "The AI scheduled the wrong meeting time." "The AI missed the important call." "The AI didn't remind me." When everything is mediated by a device, nothing is really your responsibility — and nothing is really your achievement either. This sounds like relief until you realize you've outsourced the small victories that make work feel meaningful.

If you're building AI-integrated products or evaluating wearables for your team:

  1. Demand mechanical privacy controls — not software toggles. If the device doesn't have a physical way to disable the microphone that works regardless of firmware state, it's not a privacy product. It's a surveillance product pretending to be a privacy product.

  2. Audit your dependency rate — track how many times per day you ask the AI device to do something you could do yourself. If that number increases over 30 days, you're not being augmented. You're being replaced.

  3. Read the paragraph nobody reads — Terms of service for AI devices should be reviewed by someone with a security background before your team adopts them. What you find there will determine whether you're building on a foundation or renting a trap.
