How to Take a Lovable App to Production: The Senior Engineer's Checklist

TL;DR: Taking a Lovable app to production comes down to nine engineering fixes. The first three (secrets, Row Level Security, and real auth) close most of the security holes that AI builders leave open. The other six make it stable, fast, and safe to grow. You can check several yourself in an afternoon. A few need a senior engineer.

  1. Move secrets to the server so no keys sit in the browser bundle
  2. Turn on Row Level Security for every table with user data (Supabase is the backend Lovable connects by default)
  3. Make auth real, with verified signups, expiring sessions, and server-side checks
  4. Lock CORS to your own domains
  5. Add error handling and logging so failures are visible
  6. Rate-limit the endpoints that cost money or send email
  7. Set up basic CI/CD so deploys are repeatable
  8. Add observability, meaning uptime and error tracking
  9. Index and paginate your database queries so it scales

You built something real on Lovable. It works in the preview, your demo went well, and now people want to actually use it. Then a quiet worry creeps in. Is this thing safe? Will it fall over when ten people hit it at once? Could someone read another customer's data?

Those are the right questions. AI builders are very good at shipping a working prototype and very bad at the boring production work that keeps you out of trouble. Here's the exact checklist we run on every Lovable, Bolt, or v0 app before we call it production-ready.

What actually breaks when you ship a Lovable app as-is?

The preview is a friendly place. There's one user (you), no traffic, and no attacker poking at it. Production is the opposite. The three things that bite people first are exposed secrets, an open database, and auth that only looks real. On a recent audit of an AI-built app, we found six database tables with their security rules switched off and a payment provider key sitting in plain sight in the browser bundle. Nobody had done anything wrong. The builder just never added the guardrails, and nobody told the founder they were missing.

So the job is not to rewrite your app. It's to add the guardrails a human engineer would have added from day one.

How do you keep environment variables and API keys safe?

Open your browser dev tools on the live site, go to the Sources tab, and search the bundle for your keys. If you can find your Supabase service key, your OpenAI key, or a Stripe secret in there, so can anyone else. Anything labelled "secret" or "service" belongs on the server only, never in client code.

The fix has two parts. Move every secret to a server environment variable, and route the calls that need those secrets through a small backend function instead of the browser. Public keys (like a Supabase anon key) are fine in the client. Secret keys are not. This one change closes the most common and most expensive hole, since a leaked payment or database key can drain real money before you notice.

What is Supabase Row Level Security and why does it matter?

Most Lovable apps use Supabase, and most ship with Row Level Security turned off. With it off, your database trusts the browser. Any logged-in user can ask for any row, which means user A can read user B's orders, messages, or invoices by changing a single number in a request.

Row Level Security flips that. You write a rule per table that says, in plain terms, a user can only see and change their own rows. A typical rule checks that the row's user id matches the id of whoever is asking. Turn it on for every table that holds user data, write the policies, and then try to break it from a second test account. If account two can see account one's data, you're not done. This is the single most important production fix for any multi-user app.

How do you turn preview auth into real authentication?

Preview auth often accepts any email, skips verification, and never really checks who is calling the backend. For production you want three things. Verified signups so people prove they own their email. Sessions that expire, with short-lived access tokens (around an hour) and longer refresh tokens (around a week) so a stolen token stops working fast. And server-side checks, so every sensitive request confirms the user is who they say before it does anything.

If you use Supabase Auth or Clerk, most of this is configuration rather than code. The mistake to avoid is trusting a user id that the browser sends you. Read the user from the verified session on the server instead.

What do CORS and allowed origins actually protect?

CORS decides which websites are allowed to call your backend from a browser. A lot of prototypes ship with a wildcard that allows every origin, which is convenient and unsafe. Lock it down to your real domains, your production site and maybe a staging URL, and nothing else. It takes five minutes and it stops random sites from making authenticated calls on your users' behalf.

How should you handle errors and rate limiting?

Two quiet failure modes sink early apps. The first is errors that vanish. When a call fails, the user sees a frozen screen and you see nothing, because there's no logging. Add real error handling that shows the user a clear message and records what went wrong on the server. The second is abuse. Without rate limiting, one script can hammer your signup or payment endpoint thousands of times a minute and run up your bill. Put a sensible cap on the endpoints that cost money or send email. A few lines of code save a very bad week.

Do you really need CI/CD and observability?

You need enough of both to sleep at night. CI/CD means your changes get tested and deployed the same way every time, so a fix at midnight doesn't take down the whole app. Observability means you can answer "is it up, is it slow, and what just broke" without guessing. Start small. A basic pipeline, uptime checks, and error tracking cover the first ninety percent. You do not need a giant platform on day one. You do need to stop deploying by crossing your fingers.

How do you make a Lovable app scale?

Scaling problems are usually database problems. The two that show up first are missing indexes, which make common queries crawl as your data grows, and unbounded queries that try to load everything at once. Add indexes on the columns you filter and sort by, paginate anything that returns a list, and test with roughly ten times the data you have today. Caching and bigger servers come later. Clean queries come first, and they're cheap to fix early and painful to fix late.

What can you fix yourself, and what needs an engineer?

Here's the honest split.
