  • No comment drift – if the discount rule changes, you only touch applyVipDiscount. The name still tells you what it does; there’s no separate comment to become outdated.
  • Error handling is explicit – throwing an error for an empty cart is clearer than returning a magic { success: false } object that callers must remember to check.

The result? A junior dev can glance at calculateOrderTotal and instantly grasp the flow. If they need to know why we give VIPs a 10% discount, they’ll look at the business rule doc or a short comment on applyVipDiscount – but the what is obvious from the code itself.

Why This New Power Matters

Adopting self‑documenting code is like discovering the lightsaber in Star Wars: suddenly you can cut through complexity with ease.

  • Speed – Pull requests get reviewed faster because reviewers spend less time deciphering intent.
  • Quality – Bugs surface earlier; when a function does one thing, it’s harder to hide a logic flaw inside a massive block.
  • Team morale – New hires feel productive on day one instead of drowning in comment archaeology.
  • Maintainability – Refactoring becomes safe; you can rename a helper or extract a new one without hunting down stray comments that now lie.
