Founder Patterns That Kill a Launch – And What AI Has To Do With It

I learned the hard way that partnering with people with no technical background, who want to build startups, isn't always what you'd expect. They usually have an idea, domain expertise, money, or all of the above – and a vision they think is groundbreaking. But no product.

I did it a few times. Never launched a thing in that composition. It's always something that stops a co-founder, or A founder from doing their part and trying their product on real people. For the record: I've launched several products and services in the course of last few years by myself – most of them died after customer feedback or because of lack of marketing skills on my side. But at least they tried to reach the market.

And there are a few reasons for that, or as I mentioned in the title – patterns.

1. It's a technical problem

Why don't we launch? We have a technical problem.

Yes, the prototype is done and we tested it and the idea is working.

Yes, we have built an MVP around it.

Yes, we have the Product that real people can touch and try – so we can get feedback, adjust, or stop.

But – the product is not ready, because we have a technical issue.

You see, the search works well 90% of the time – and it doesn't work at all for this very specific case. We're not ready, it's a technical problem.

You see, the onboarding flow has three steps – and the user will need five. How do I know? I just feel it. And it's a technical issue.

The product covers 80% of what the user might need, we don't even know what the other 20% are – but we need to figure that out before anyone sees it.

Otherwise – the product is caput. The very first users we show this unpolished version of the MVP – will tell everyone else in the world and we're done.

Often, as you might guess, the reason is not technical.

The person on the other side of the project is human too – and they might be insecure, afraid to show something imperfect. It's easier to say "the product isn't ready" than "I'm not ready."

If you're an equal partner, there's a conversation to be had. A compromise. OK, one more iteration – and we launch.

But if you're a contractor working for the investor – your opinion doesn't count really. You just build stuff.

The one with the vision doesn't need advice from the one who just writes code. Steve Jobs never asked for advice building the iPhone, right?

So we're not stuck. It's a technical problem.

2. One-More-Thing Loop

Who doesn't like features? Everyone does. Especially when you're the builder – when the process is everything. I'm the same.

But at some point you need feedback. Real feedback, from people. And every day you delay that – you're flying blind.

One more feature and we launch. OK, one more. And one more after that.

You build lists of important changes. You implement, redo, redesign. A week later you're in the same place – but now you have a cool loadscreen animation and haptic feedback. No one's seen it yet, though.

And here's the thing you don't notice while you're polishing: each "one more thing" isn't an improvement anymore. It's a new version. And then another one. And you're going in circles.

Meanwhile, the outreach that should have started before you even finished the core user flow – hasn't started at all.

3. I Know About the Codex

Everyone knows about AI tools that changed the industry. Codex, Claude Code – those changed everything. Your non-technical co-founder has been watching, learning, reading vibe-coding Twitter.

Someone on Twitter shipped a startup in a weekend. Why can't we do the same?

Why does it take so long? There's an AI tool, it writes code for you, right?

And look – they're not wrong about everything. What's happening with dev speed thanks to AI is genuinely incredible sometimes. Not using these tools properly means losing time and money.

But knowing that a tool exists and knowing what to build with it – those are different things. Your friend's micro-SaaS with Stripe payments, built in a weekend with Claude Code? Great. Now try ten-fifteen services tied together, orchestrated, deployed on infrastructure that's a bit more involved than a Hetzner VPS with a couple of Docker containers.

And more importantly – try knowing upfront that this architecture is what you need. That's not a prompt away. That's years of building things and watching them break.

4. A False Competence

You've seen the posts. Someone spent a weekend chatting with ChatGPT and now they've cracked a problem in number theory, or figured out where physics has been wrong for a century. At least they think they have. The pattern in a startup is the same one, just scaled down to a single product.

It can be done, and very easily. ChatGPT told me how.

The MVP is there, but it's not perfect. And if you have an image of the product in your head – not perfect means not ready.

The good news is – in 2026, you don't need to understand code to understand that something is wrong. And you don't need to be a developer to ask ChatGPT how to fix it.

So you start asking. Carefully. Methodically. You describe the product. You describe what's wrong with it. You ask why it's built this way and not that way. You challenge every answer. You dig deeper. You ask follow-ups that would make a senior engineer pause. You go where no one on your team apparently bothered to go.

Turns out we've been building it wrong. The whole time.

Three hours later, you walk out with The Solution. One that finally fixes everything.

Every earlier problem has an answer. The technical issues now have a fix. The missing features – already accounted for. The timelines that seemed too long – ChatGPT says a few hours.

So now you're on a call. And they're presenting you a brand new architecture – without quite knowing what that word means in software. You just need to build it.

By the way – there's a chat log. The plan is there, it's confident, but not specific – they're not a coder, after all. But the direction is clear: our whole approach was wrong, and ChatGPT can prove it.

Your job now is to read between the lines of a three-hour conversation between a non-technical person and an AI chatbot that never says "I don't know."

You can try to argue. But you're not arguing with your co-founder anymore – you're arguing with ChatGPT, through someone who can't fully explain what it said.

Or you can just build whatever they want. Until the money runs out. Or the project does.

Or, if you're just a contractor – finish the gig and walk. That's the easy out.


In the cases above I mostly bring up AI as a cause of delays and a pressure tool. But what it actually enables right now – for a solo builder, or for a team built around a sane domain expert who needs a product – is remarkable.
