Apple confirmed back in January that Google’s Gemini AI model will power new Siri features. That not only frees us from the need to wait for Apple’s own AI models to catch up, but also means we have a pretty good idea of what’s in store for us.
Gemini Personal Intelligence provided our first glimpse of what we can expect from the new Siri, and a Google event has pointed to a number of additional features …
For a long time, it seemed Apple planned to use its own AI models to power the new Siri. That was leading to doubts about how powerful it might be and when it would finally launch.
Rumors emerged that the iPhone maker was planning on partnering with Google for access to its Gemini models, and the company confirmed this at the start of the year.
“After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users.”
This seems to offer the best of both worlds: the best AI models coupled to Apple’s privacy protections.
A beta version of Gemini Personal Intelligence provided an exciting preview of what we can expect.
Personal Intelligence can retrieve specific details from text, photos, or videos in your Google apps to customize Gemini responses. This includes Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, etc), Google Photos, your YouTube watch history, and of all of the various Google search services you’ve used (Search, Shopping, News, Maps, Google Flights, and Hotels). The Apple version will of course pull information from Apple apps like Mail, Calendar, Photos, and Notes.
The Android show revealed further upcoming Gemini features that are also likely to come to the new Siri.
Task automation will work in more apps and support screen/image context. For example: “Imagine you have a long grocery list on your notes app. Just long press the power button over the list and ask Gemini to build a shopping cart with all of the items for delivery.”
Autofill with Google is getting (opt-in) Gemini Personal Intelligence to support more types of forms.
Gboard Rambler upgrades voice input with Gemini models that understand the core of what you want to type and filters out filler words, pauses, repetition, and self-corrections.
Android is getting generative UI, starting with the ability to create custom homescreen widgets and Wear OS Tiles that are populated by information from the web and your Google apps.
Whether an Apple version of that latter one will come to iOS 27 remains to be seen, but it’s certainly something I’d love to see.
