EXCLUSIVE: As AMC’s The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is headed to its fourth and final season, the series’ executive producer and showrunner David Zabel is staying in the fold, signing an overall deal with AMC Studios, which produces The Walking Dead franchise.
Under the pact, Zabel has sold a gritty cop drama to Netflix, with Scott Free producing. It is currently in development at the streamer.
Zabel’s AMC Studios overall deal expands his relationship with the studio where he most recently had a pact built around Daryl Dixon, which he steered for its entire run.
“David is a talented writer and seasoned showrunner who we are thrilled to be working with,” said Ben Davis, EVP of original programming for AMC Global Media. “He has been a fantastic partner on The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which has been one of the most ambitious shows in the entire universe. We are very much looking forward to developing new AMC Studios projects together under this new overall deal.”
Starring TWD fan favorite Norman Reedus reprising his role as Dixon, the spinoff expanded the franchise to Europe, filming in France for its first two seasons and Spain for Seasons 3 and 4. It gave Zabel presence on Netflix, as the post-apocalyptic drama has been streaming there as part of AMC’s licensing deal with the streamer.
Zabel started his career on broadcast where he developed, executive produced and ran multiple series, including a five-season tenure as EP/showrunner of NBC’s ER and a stint as EP/showrunner of the ABC police drama series, Detroit 1-8-7. He created and ran the PBS series Mercy Street before segueing to cable with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. He is now branching out to streaming. Zabel is repped by UTA and HJTH.
