BBC Comedy Goes Big On Returners With New Seasons Of ‘Ama...

BBC comedy boss Jon Petrie is all about returners as the corporation’s annual Comedy Festival gets underway.

Petrie has given second and third season greenlights to six shows plus an eighth for stalwart Two Doors Down and a documentary about Not Going Out, the BBC’s longest-running sitcom.

Fresh off its BAFTA win for Best Scripted Comedy, Amandaland Season 3 is among the returners alongside Daisy May Cooper’s Am I Being Unreasonable? and Black Ops starring Gbemisola Ikumelo and SNL UK breakout Hammed Animashaun. There are also new seasons of Lucia Keskin’s Things You Should Have Done, A24 and Various Artists’ Such Brave Girls, and Mammoth, the latter of which is currently being developed in the U.S. with Fox.

Alongside the returners, the BBC has ordered Hopley Hall [working title] starring Derry Girls lead Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Opening Up created by stand-up comic Amy Gledhill with Starstruck actor Nic Sampson. The former follows the ensemble of staff who keep a Grade 1 listed house running in the Northern Irish countryside, while the latter follows a long-term couple who try to fix their faltering sex life by sleeping with other people.

None of the returners come as a huge surprise but revealing them all at the same time shows the confidence Petrie now has in his slate as he attempts to build out the next generation of long-running hits. Motherland spin-off Amandaland in particular has been a bit of a sensation, drawing huge audiences to the BBC, winning a BAFTA and generating memes aplenty. At the BAFTAs on Sunday, co-writer Holly Walsh said her dream Amandaland guest is Melania Trump, describing her as “America’s Amanda.” Walsh will now be feeling the pressure to get the First Lady on board.

Am I Being Unreasonable?, meanwhile, has given a shot in the arm to a new comedy thriller sub-genre, while the likes of Black Ops and Such Brave Girls are highly rated.

Petrie is addressing the BBC Comedy Festival in Liverpool this afternoon. The likes of James Corden, Ruth Jones and Diane Morgan are set to speak over the next 24 hours.
