Bruno Dumont’s Red Rocks, a billed as a Romeo and Juliet-style love story set on the French Riviera, has joined the 2026 lineup of Cannes’ Directors Fortnight.
The picture will play as a special screening with Dumont also giving a masterclass during the 58th edition of the parallel section, running from May 13 to 23.
Dumont made his first appearance at Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight in 1997 with The Life of Jesus. The film was awarded a special mention within the framework of the Caméra d’Or prize, covering all first films debuting across the Official Selection and parallel sections.
In 2014, the section played his four-part television miniseries Li’l Quinquin and he returned with his musical film Jeannette, the Childhood of Joan of Arc in 2017.
In a statement, announcing the Red Rocks screening, Directors’ Fortnight said the film marked a fresh departure in Dumont’s filmography.
“Shot in the French Riviera, with very young children, the film adopts a documentary-like approach, led by the deliberate use of wide-angle lenses. Once again, Dumont explores the grace that can emerge from cinema,” said the section.
Red Rocks joins one of the starriest and high-profile editions of Directors’ Fortnight of recent years.
The 58th edition opens with Kantemir Balagov’s New Jersey-set drama Butterfly Jam, starring Barry Keoghan and Riley Keough, with other selections including Reed Van Dyk’s Iraqi war veteran drama Atonement, with Kenneth Branagh, Hiam Abbass and Boyd Holbrook; Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri’s ‘Mrs Dalloway’-reimagining Clarissa with Sophie Okonedo, David Oyelowo and Ayo Edebiri, and July Jung’s Dora, starring Japanese actress Sakura Ando (Shoplifters) and K-pop star and actress Kim Do-yeon.
