Sinners director Ryan Coogler and his Proximity Media have a new home for their television projects.

Coogler’s company has signed an overall deal with Netflix to develop series. It’s a major statement of intent for the streamer and comes after Coogler’s five-year TV deal with Disney ended.

It also marks the latest major talent move today after Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson struck a big, five-year deal with Disney’s 20th Television after leaving Warner Bros. TV.

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler founded the company with his wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. On the television side, it is responsible for series including Marvel Studios’ Ironheart on Disney+, National Geographic docuseries Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time and Disney+ animated series Eyes of Wakanda.

The TV division is run by VP, Television Simone Harris.

Coogler is still in business with Disney, leaving behind two projects: a reboot of The X-Files starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel and the live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards, starring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman and Tim McGraw.

The X-Files reboot at Hulu landed a pilot order in February, while Southern Bastards also has a pilot order. The company is also developing a series based on Animorphs.

On the film side, Coogler is coming off of Sinners starring Michael B. Jordan, the highest grossing original feature of 2025. The movie, which saw Coogler land a creator-friendly deal for it at Warner Bros., received a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, winning four including Best Actor for Jordan and Best Original Screenplay for Coogler.

The deal marks the most high-profile overall deal with Netflix in some time. Recent overalls for the streamer include Power creator Courtney A. Kemp, Tires’ Shane Gillis, Wayward creator Mae Martin and Bridgerton creator Chris Van Dusen.

It marks a blow for Disney, which touted Coogler’s deal in 2021 with Bob Iger calling him a “singular storyteller” at the time. However, the two companies have been trading Ryans after Ryan Murphy moved from Netflix back to Disney a couple of years ago.
