ESPN NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller Reveals “Life-Saving” ...
Dade Hayes · 2026-06-24 · via News

Matt Miller, an NFL Draft analyst for ESPN, is recovering from a serious car accident that resulted in the life-saving amputation of his left arm.

Miller revealed the news Tuesday to his 316,000 followers on X, under the handle @nfldraftscout.

After the accident last week in Missouri, Miller wrote, he was airlifted to a local hospital. “I’m deeply grateful for the exceptional care I have received, from the first responders to the doctors, nurses and medical staff,” he added. “I’m incredibly fortunate to be writing this.”

Due to the accident, the Joplin, MO native said he sustained “significant injuries, including multiple fractures and broken ribs” and also underwent “a life-saving amputation” of his left arm.

“While I have a long road ahead, I’m focused on my recovery and taking things one day at a time,” he wrote. “Thank you for the overwhelming support, prayers and kind messages – they have meant so much to me and my family during this time. I look forward to continuing my recovery and getting back to ESPN to talk football, including what should be an exciting 2027 NFL Draft class.”

The post elicited more than 1,000 replies, including from prominent ESPN colleagues like Adam Schefter and Mina Kimes as well as recognizable NFL media figures like Ross Tucker, Mike Golic, Laura Rutledge and Ian Rapoport.

This year’s first-round coverage of the NFL Draft attracted an average audience of 13.2 million, according to the NFL, which was one of the best ratings in its history. Originally an obscure event of interest only to the hard-core crowd tracking league roster minutiae, the draft has grown into a major viewership magnet. The multi-night proceedings annually cap off weeks of speculation about who will be picked when and by what team with a spectacle watched live by tens of thousands of fans.

Some X users shared images from local news accounts of the crash, which appeared to show an SUV on a flatbed truck. The vehicle’s front end had been almost completely sheared off, and there was extensive damage to the driver’s side.

Miller joined ESPN in 2021 as an NFL Draft contributor and then returned as a year-round draft analyst in 2022. In 2023, he made his on-air debut during coverage of the later rounds. He has appeared regularly across various ESPN shows.

Before ESPN, Miller was Bleacher Report’s lead NFL Draft writer from 2010 to 2021, and prior to that worked as scouting director for New Era Scouting and also as a coach and recruiting coordinator for the CFL’s Joplin Crusaders.

Here is Miller’s post:

Last week, I was involved in a serious car accident in Missouri and was airlifted to Mercy Hospital. I’m deeply grateful for the exceptional care I have received, from the first responders to the doctors, nurses and medical staff. I’m incredibly fortunate to be writing this.…
