‘Backrooms’ $118M WW Bonanza; ‘Obsession’ Obsessed With $148M WW; ‘Michael’ Nearing $900M WW – Global Box Office Update
Anthony D'Alessandro · 2026-05-31 · via News

Backrooms wasn’t just a stateside sensation, rather the top A24 opening in over 30 countries across Latin America, the UK, Australia/New Zealand, South Korea, Middle East, Scandinavia, Taiwan, Israel and Turkey.

As we told you, global came in at $118M for the Kane Parsons movie, of which $36M came from abroad. In regards to that foreign take, it outstripped the first weekend of the previous big horror pic opening this year, Paramount’s Scream 7, which was $33.1M. The global start here is also ahead of Scream 7‘s franchise record start of $97.1M WW—which was 2026’s previous big opening for a horror movie.

Versus other comps, Backrooms outgrossed Weapons (+62%), Scream 7 (+22%), Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (+5%) and Final Destination: Bloodlines (+4%), all of which opened across wider international footprints in their first frames.

Watch on Deadline

LatAM led all territories with $12.7M, the No. 1 pic in the region overall, more than 3x the previous biggest A24 title opening. Latin America on Scream 7 was $7.7M in its first frame.

In the UK, the film also ranked #1 overall with $5.6M. Not only is this the highest grossing opening weekend for an A24 title in the territory, but also the best horror opening of the year so far, besting Scream 7‘s $5.3M.

Backrooms also led Australia/New Zealand with $4.4M, making it the second highest grossing horror title of the decade and nearly doubling the previous biggest opening weekend for an A24 title. Scream 7 did $2.5M there in Australia in its first frame back at the end of February.

Other territory shoutouts for Backrooms are South Korea ($2.7M / No. 2, but beating Mandalorian and Grogu‘s No. 3 $1M take), Middle East ($2.4M /No. 2), Scandinavia ($2.2M / No. 1) and Italy ($2M/No. 1, ahead of Scream 7‘s $1.8M).

Next weekend, the Kane Parsons directed movie opens doors in Spain, Russia & CIS, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Slovenia. France, Germany, Poland and Belgium will follow two weeks later.

YouTube fever isn’t just a North American thing, but around the globe with Focus Features’ Obsession minting $40.2M from both Universal and non-Universal territories this weekend, after eight new markets opening for a total count of 45 territories. Global for the Curry Barker movie stands at $148M; it has a way to go before toppling London Has Fallen ($206M) and Downton Abbey ($195M) as Focus’ highest grossing movie of all-time. However, in the U.S., the horror romance is the best that Focus has ever seen.

Total foreign weekend on Obsession is $13.8M ($10.6M from 45 Uni territories, and $3.2M from 11 non-Uni markets) along with an amazing $26.4M third weekend hold stateside. While domestic is +10% in weekend 3, international is up an awesome +39%.

Uni territory India posted a great $900K weekend at 362 screens, the No. 1 MPA title in the market, which is ahead of all key comps: more than double Weapons, more than 3x Sinners and The Invisible Man, and more than 6x Longlegs and Talk To Me.
