‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ Baby Uttered First Words To ...

Nick Offerman had the DGA Theater in stitches during Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for Apple TV’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles.

“I always knew I would impress people with my acrobatics,” Offerman said about his very physical performance as former pro wrestler Jinx, father of the titular character Margo (Elle Fanning), a broke college student who is impregnated and subsequently abandoned by her married lit professor.

The series is based on the 2024 novel by Rufi Thorpe. Margo’s frustratingly immature mother Shyanne Millet (Michelle Pfeiffer) is unwilling to give her daughter and grandson the help they need. So naturally Margo signs up for Gen Z’s side hustle of choice: OnlyFans. All the while finding some unexpected help from her previously absentee dad.

Offerman said he and wife Megan Mullally first became entranced by Fanning’s talents when watching Hulu’s The Great. “We were just treated to the greatest young actress of our day — she’s astonishing,” he said. “To be cast as her dad and that happened because I had a baby with Michelle Pfieffer, I’ve had worse gigs.”

It’s the first time in their 30-year marriage that Pfieffer has teamed with her husband David E. Kelley, who created, co-wrote and produced Margo.

Executive producer Eva Anderson shares that Fanning requested for “there to always be a human baby not a rubber baby.” she said xplaining Fanning felt that “if I hold a real baby, it changes the energy in the room.” Anderson shares that the babies “ended up bonding with the cast so acutely that they started just acting even though they couldn’t speak. If Nick was holding one of them and looking concerned, the baby would mimic his expression. … It was the thing we were most scared of and the thing that paid off the best.”

Offerman enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime moment that was caught on camera, when the baby on set uttered their very first words — “dad,” aimed directly at Nick, who isn’t a dad in real life and seemingly felt a little uncomfortable with the situation. “It was in the script, and we thought it was impossible, but then baby did it, the baby called Nick ‘Dad.’”

Offerman joked: “And then the baby dies. You’ve seen the show. It’s not all comedy, folks.” Offerman jokes.

Check back Monday for the panel video.
