EXCLUSIVE: Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery has signed on for an undisclosed role in John Wick spinoff Caine, directed by and starring martial arts legend Donnie Yen as the blind assassin.
Montgomery joins Yen and Rina Sawayama, who will also reprise her role as Akira. While Montgomery’s role and the logline are being kept under wraps, the new film is said to continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to The High Table.
Currently in production for Lionsgate, the movie is produced and creatively overseen by the franchise producers who have built John Wick into a billion-dollar grossing franchise: Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through their Thunder Road shingle, and Chad Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner. Keanu Reeves and John Saunders will also produce. Yen will serve as an executive producer on the project, as will Courtney Brock.
Lionsgate will continue selling the project at this week’s Cannes Market.
Screenplay comes from Mattson Tomlin, writer of the upcoming The Batman Part II and the adaptation of the Keanu Reeves-created comic book BRZRKR, and Michael McGrale. Yen is well known for movies including Ip Man, Flash Point, and Hero.
Montgomery is best known for his performance as Billy Hargrove in Netflix’s smash series Stranger Things. His acting credits also include Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Dean Israelite’s Power Rangers and Samuel Van Grinsven’s Went Up the Hill. In 2026, Montgomery is due to make his directorial debut with The Engagement. He can currently be seen as the lead in the reimagining of the 1970s cult classic film Faces of Death. Montgomery has also released a collection of poems entitled DKMH.
