Netflix has unveiled Fool Night, an anime based on the Kasumi Yasuda manga, while revealing a first look at The One Piece.

Atsushi Yukawa’s series was shown at a Netflix Anime session at Annecy this afternoon, with new looks at a number of big shows and movies.

Fool Night, Kasumi Yasuda’s manga that first came out in 2020, is set in a world facing a serious oxygen shortage, as humanity builds a society that relies on the meager amount of oxygen provided by a technology called Transfloration. A young man, Toshiro Kamiya, lives in poverty and works hard to pay taxes, cover living expenses, and afford medication for his mentally ill mother. In this dark world full of despair, he chooses the path of the “Spiriflor” — the plants that humans transform into. Yuji Yamano, Netflix’s director of content acquisition for anime, introduced the upcoming content to a packed crowd at Annecy, who waited in the boiling heat to see pics and clips. According to Yamano, anime was “once seen as niche and now it’s a global force,” as he revealed Netflix anime got 1.5 billion views last year and more than 50% of subs watch it in some form. Japanese content, he said, is the second most-watched non-English-language content for the streamer.

The show was unveiled alongside new images of The One Piece, Sparks of Tomorrow, Blue Eye Samurai and Bass X Machina. There is also a trailer for animated feature The Ribbon Hero.

The One Piece is distinct from Netflix’s hit One Piece series and starts from the very beginning of the original manga’s East Blue saga, tapping into the expressive potential of modern technology to offer a familiar yet fresh take on the adventures of Luffy. The image is from episode 1, “Romance Dawn.”

Coming later this year, Bass X Macina is set in a lawless Steampunk West overrun by brutal outlaws, machines and supernatural terrors, while Sparks of Tomorrow follows how technological progress evolved along a different path shaped by steam power blankets Kyoto in smoke.

Launching in August, The Ribbon Hero is Yuki Igarashi’s debut feature and depicts the story of a lone hero who chooses to defy a harsh destiny, set in a delicately crafted world and brought to life through polished action.

Netflix has been doubling down on anime of late driven by the success of the likes of One Piece and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The streamer is out in force at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival this week and will host a separate Next on Netflix event tomorrow.
