Matthew Broome has admitted to feeling the pressure as he and Asha Banks brought the UK version of Prime Video’s Culpables franchise to life.

Broome is at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, where he is being feted with a Most Promising Talent award. His career has been on a sharp upward trajectory. After appearing in Apple TV’s The Buccaneers, Broome landed the plum role of Nick in YA film My Fault: London, playing opposite Banks in the English-language remake of Culpa Mia.

The Spanish Culpables movies had already been a huge hit on Prime Video before the first UK film hit screens, and Broome said the pressure was dialed up.

“I remember when we were first announced and it didn’t land the most positively, which was understandable. They’d done such a quick turnaround to do an English version and [the original] was so loved,” he said. “There was definitely the pressure when the first still images of the project came out, or the first clip or the first trailer. Every time [we thought], ‘Once the film comes out in its entirety will we be able to prove to them we’ve done a good job?’

“There was definitely a lot of pressure when the film came out. When it did, and was being received so well, we were just like, ‘We did it.’ And now [fans] have welcomed us in and it’s so lovely.”

Prime Video then greenlit Your Fault: London and Our Fault: London, Anglo versions of Culpa Tuya and Culpa Nuestra, and completing the trilogy of UK movies.

Speaking about the new film, Broome said: “The characters have moved in, and in the second film we have been together about a year – and two people in a year-long relationship are drastically different to the way they were when first meeting.”

The Spanish and UK film series are based on Mercedes Ron’s novels, which originally found an audience on Wattpad. Several adaptations of Ron’s work are currently underway at Prime Video, which has firmly planted a flag in the YA space. The author has since written a fourth installment in the Culpables series, Culpa Vuestra, but there has been no word on whether it will be adapted.

“At the moment we are done, but you never know,” Broome said. “Mercedes has written a fourth book and you never know what’s going to happen with that.”
