The limits of open source at enterprise scale

Like many early-stage companies, Athena initially relied on open source libraries to power its document workflows. These tools worked well for early prototypes, but enterprise customers quickly introduced new requirements. Athena’s platform depended heavily on document interaction, including citations, redaction, rendering, and structured workflows embedded directly into the system.

Supporting these capabilities inside regulated environments created a growing challenge, as enterprise customers required predictable system behavior, secure deployment models, and strict controls around how documents were processed and accessed.

Open source libraries weren’t designed for these demands, and maintaining them internally would have required dedicated engineering resources and introduced unnecessary risk into a critical part of the platform.
