Editor’s note: This week we’re joining thousands of faculty and administrators at leading EdTech events, ASU-GSV Summit and Internet2 Community Exchange. Come see us in person or follow along on X and Facebook for the latest updates on Gemini for Education, NotebookLM and the latest Google Cloud AI solutions.

With the academic year in full swing, we’ve been inspired by how millions of students and educators are using Google AI tools to reach their full potential. We’ve heard how these tools give students agency to learn in their own way and help educators provide more personalized, impactful support. Here’s what we’ve heard so far:

And our AI tools continue to evolve alongside the educators, students and institutions we serve. Here’s a look at what’s new with our AI training, tools, and programs.

Bridging the AI literacy gap and accelerating research

  • Access free AI literacy training: In partnership with ISTE+ASCD, Google is offering free, comprehensive AI training to all 6 million K12 and higher ed educators in the U.S. Sign up for the Google AI Educator Series here to get notified when content launches on May 13, 2026, with new modules released each month. This training will also be included in the Google AI for Education Accelerator, which offers free access to industry-recognized career certificates, AI training, and Google's most advanced AI tools.
  • Accelerate academic research: We’ve launched our inaugural cohort of research affiliates in the U.S., partnering with Purdue University, the University of Alabama, and UC Riverside to bring Google’s AI and supercomputing power to the lab. This secure, cost-effective partnership provides researchers with discounted AI-optimized hardware, early access to our advanced frontier models, and direct collaboration with Google’s own experts. Connect with your Google Cloud account team to explore the Google Public Sector Program for Accelerated Research (GPAR) to supercharge your institution's innovation.

Enabling more personalized teaching and learning experiences

  • Study and learn in NotebookLM with higher limits: Educators and students with Education Plus or the Teaching and Learning add-on now have expanded access to NotebookLM, providing double the limits on the number of notebooks, sources per notebook, infographics, and more. This means that educators can create more personalized learning experiences and students can learn at their own pace with additional quizzes, flashcards, audio overviews and more without worrying about hitting a limit.
  • Help students prepare for the NEET exam in the Gemini app: Earlier this year we partnered with leading education companies, including The Princeton Review, Physics Wallah and Careers360, to bring full-length, no-cost practice SAT and JEE Main tests to Gemini to help students study at their own pace. Rolling out now, students can also prep for the NEET exam, grounded in high quality content from Physics Wallah and Careers360, by prompting Gemini, “I want to take a NEET mock exam”, with support for more standardized tests coming soon.
  • Save time on lesson prep and personalize learning with Gemini in Moodle: Gemini is now an official AI provider for the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), allowing admins to have Gemini power Moodle's AI "placements" such as text summarization and image generation. Starting in May, Gemini LTI will also support Moodle, bringing AI tools like the Gemini app and NotebookLM directly into the LMS. For example, educators will be able to assign a Gem or notebook to their students directly in Moodle to support assignments or class projects.

Supporting learning from school and beyond

  • Take your photos with you when you graduate: Previously when you graduated or left an organization, you were able to take your Drive and Gmail content with you to preserve your academic work. Starting in May, you’ll also be able to take your Google Photos with you using Google Takeout Transfer. This top-requested feature will allow users to migrate their memories from their school or university-issued Google account to a personal Gmail account so their personal history stays with them after they leave an organization. Later this year, we will introduce new Photos management and bulk-deletion capabilities in the admin console, giving admins better visibility into which users have migrated their data and the ability to proactively manage content to free up pooled Drive storage.

When people leave an education institution they can now use Google Takeout to seamlessly copy and transfer their Google Photos content — including photos, videos, and albums — alongside their Drive and Gmail data to a personal Google account.

A browser window showing the third step ("Transfer your content" screen) within Google Takeout migration process. The screen displays three product toggles - Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos - all switched to the "on" position, indicating they are selected for transfer. Under the Google Photos section, the detailed text specifies "Photos, videos & albums you own". A banner at the bottom offers a Google AI plan to help the user secure more storage for the transfer, and a blue "Start Transfer" button is visible at the bottom left.
