Nested initialisms

Posted Jun 19, 2026 6:31 UTC (Fri) by ringerc (subscriber, #3071)
Parent article: Single-hop block replication with RMR and BRMR

While I find the ideas here very interesting, and it's good to see some progress in distributed storage, it took me some time to work out how those bewildering initialisms were arrived at.

  • BRMR = Block device over RMR
  • RMR = Reliable Multicast over RTRS
  • RTRS = RDMA transport library
  • RDMA = Remote Direct Memory Access

Yielding BRTR as

B-
  lock
  device
  over
R-
    eliable
M-
    ulticast
    over
R-
           emote
        D-
           irect
        M-
           emory
        A-
           ccess
    TR-
        an-
    S-
        port

That's some military-grade acronym definition there.

In any case I look forward to the genuine and exciting benefits from this work - while waiting apprehensively to find out how cloud service providers use it to introduce new levels of opaque and unpredictable pricing that will make its name look simple in comparison.
