Just want to add one more compliment to Gentoo. It was just an excellent choice to use bash as the 'language' of Portage's ebuilds (aka package definitions). This means NOT learning a DSL or an obscure format for packages. If you are familiar with bash (including patterns for troubleshooting bash), you already are familiar with a big part of writing and maintaining Gentoo's packages.
The barrier to entry is not too high!
