To add to the alternative alternatives, I've also found Versity S3 Gateway to be interesting. It is a lightweight service to translate S3 API calls into other storage backends, notably including POSIX filesystems. It also stores objects using their keys as the file names, so your S3 bucket just becomes a folder of normal files. Overall a simple and low overhead system for things only needing a single node.
