Upgrading 64-bit-capable systems to 64-bit kernels?

Could the 64-bit-capable hardware be switched to a 64-bit kernel via a software update? The hardware is capable of it, and the userspace can stay unmodified unless it runs into a bug in compat syscall or ioctl handling. The userspace might need to be recompiled for Y2038 anyway.
