Building AI tailored for education, with educators in the lead

Google’s AI tools help educators support their teaching goals and provide personalized experiences to help students learn in the way that works best for them — all within a secure environment.

Over the last few years, we’ve worked with educational institutions and partners worldwide to develop solutions built for them: AI grounded in learning science, with tools that keep educators in the lead when determining how technology can best add value to the classroom. These seamlessly connected tools are designed to help educators support their students in the way that works best for them — all while keeping their data private and secure.

Supporting student success with educator-led AI

AI has the potential to transform education and create more personalized and accessible pathways to learn through responsibly built tools — but only if done right. When teachers actively guide AI use, the results are clear. We are expanding our teacher-led AI activities in Google Classroom to help educators support their students with relevant, personal, transparent learning experiences that:

  • Keep educators in the lead: For example, teachers can create interactive study guides, provide adaptive quiz prep, or give students personalized support as they work on their homework.
  • Stay rooted in curriculum: Educators can select which class materials should inform the activities, keeping the content relevant to teaching goals.
  • Give actionable insights: Teachers will get visibility and insights into how students are interacting with the material at an individual and class level to inform their instruction.

In the coming months, we’re bringing teacher-led activities to Google Classroom for Guided Learning in Gemini, study notebooks in Gemini, and NotebookLM. To support educators across the platforms they use, teacher-led AI experiences will be available in the coming months in select learning management systems. 1

Teacher-led Guided Learning in Gemini allows educators to provide students with a distraction-free, curriculum-informed space while gaining valuable insights into their progress.

Teacher-led study notebooks allow educators to help students prep for exams using bite-sized lessons and quizzes that are grounded in class material and adapt as they learn.

Teacher-led NotebookLM allows educators to transform class materials into interactive flash cards, podcasts and more to support students’ understanding, plus get insights.

To help educators guide these new AI experiences and keep students on task, they can use Focus Mode in Class tools on Chromebooks. 2 For example, a teacher can lock student screens to NotebookLM to anchor on approved research material, or they can give students relevant test prep support based on their Classroom content. Coming soon to Class tools, a new Guided Learning toggle makes it even easier to give students real-time support during class activities, while reducing distractions and keeping students focused on their assignments.

Using Class tools, educators can lock students to Gemini’s Guided Learning mode during class time, reducing distractions and keeping students focused on their assignments while giving teachers visibility into student work.

Making teaching tools more relevant and helpful with Classroom context

Educators tell us that AI is most helpful when it understands their particular class situation, whether that’s identifying students who might need extra support or making use of an educator’s existing curriculum materials. To help, today we are launching the connected Classroom app in Gemini. 3 It securely uses existing assignments, grades and materials to help analyze progress and draft tailored activities. As part of Google Workspace for Education, your data stays secure and is never used to train AI models.

We know teachers thrive when their favorite tools work together. In the coming months, we’re launching a Google Classroom Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This allows external EdTech platforms to build connection points to securely reference Classroom context, keeping daily workflows unified while unlocking new ways of teaching tailored to their class.

Here, an educator is able to understand learning gaps across the last three assignments so they know which topics need re-teaching.

Educator Chad DeCicco shares how Gemini acts as a "co-teacher with endless energy" by helping him understand his curriculum and draft parent emails based on student progress in Google Classroom.

To prep a last-minute lesson plan for a substitute teacher, the educator provides direction on what’s best for the class and gets Gemini’s help in finding relevant activities.

A quote from Anjana Iyer, a Chemistry-Special Ed teacher, praising Gemini for helping her differentiate support for students.

The educator uses Gemini to draft announcements across classes, then reviews them before before posting to Classroom.

Giving educators confidence in how they use technology

The best classrooms are built around teachers and their students. AI is a powerful tool for learning, but the magic happens when we balance new digital tools with the irreplaceable human connection between teacher and student.

Building purpose-built tools is only half of our job. The other half is making sure educators feel confident using them and are in the lead when it comes to figuring out how and when these tools add value to their class.

That’s why Google for Education is investing in global training and community programs. The Google AI Educator Series, developed in partnership with ISTE+ASCD, has the ambition to make AI training available to all 6 million U.S. educators so that they feel confident in how they choose to use AI to support their teaching efforts.
