BMW plans a big turnaround in its compact lineup. The new generation of the smallest model will again use rear-wheel drive, but this time without an internal combustion engine.
The upcoming electric model, which will most likely bear the name BMW i1, will arrive by the end of the decade and will be the successor to the former BMW i3.
Unlike the current Series 1 with front-wheel drive, the new i1 will use a special rear-wheel drive EV mechanical platform, reports b92.
However, BMW will not completely discontinue the gasoline Series 1. The model with internal combustion engines will continue to be sold alongside the electric version, but both cars will have a similar design and new Neue Klasse technology.
According to information from British Autocar, the electric i1 should appear in 2028, while competitors like new Audi and Mercedes models will arrive earlier.
BMW continues to insist on its "Power of Choice" strategy, i.e., the ability to choose between gasoline and electric models.
Customers will thus get the same modern design and technology regardless of the type of powertrain.
